It was odd really as there was also a craze of acting gay (calling other boys "love" for instance).

I remember being at college and somebody asking me for something and I replied with "no problem darling" and him exploding into a rage, "ARE YOU GAY OR SOMETHING!".

Yeah "Gay!" was the default insult amount boys in my secondary school, even then I thought WTF?

The other fall back was to call someone "ginger" because having red hair is the biggest crime known to man!

I remember folk considering 'So, you're gay' to be a perfectly acceptable way to end an argument.

I remember having to constantly run to the aid of my one friend who got beat up all the time for being gay, dude wasn't gay people just assumed he was and thought that was enough reason to black his eyes or boot him in the ribs, school was rubbish everything was a reason for people to treat people like dirt college and uni were much better.

My grandad used to call everyone 'love' regardless of gender, which sounded incredibly odd coming from a 6' 2" deep voiced burly Yorkshire bloke with massive hands.

It's apparently a Sheffield thing, at least its not as bad as the Derbyshire penchant for calling everyone 'duck'

There was a out gay guy at my school who once said that he had slept with a bunch of the six formers but wasn't going to name names because they weren't out. It was an all boys school so there was bound to be a bunch of gay people there.

At my school, I was always being told that i was gay (and as you said, that was considered to be a major crime as it was the mid 1990's), this is despite the fact that i was one of the few chaps in class who'd actually had a girlfriend.

It's an all over South Yorkshire thing. It can be incredibly annoying coming from someone a lot younger than you. Just sounds very patronising. But from the older ones it's just their way....

I'm from Nottingham and it's aye up me duck , and it's only said to people your being nice to so it's not meant to be patronising. I wouldn't say it to someone who I thought was a nob etc
