Sainsbury's has announced 3,500 job cuts, mainly from the Argos chain it bought in 2016.

The retailer said it planned to close about 420 Argos standalone stores by March 2024, although it would open 150 more outlets in Sainsbury's stores.

Jobs will also go in the supermarkets with the closure of its delicatessens and fresh fish and meat counters.

The firm also posted half-year results, revealing a £137m loss which it blamed on closures and "market changes".

The redundancies increase the mounting jobs toll announced by companies facing a coronavirus hit to trading.

On Wednesday, John Lewis and Lloyds Banking Group said they are cutting a combined 2,500 jobs.

I think Tesco also binned off some of their ‘fresh’ counters.

I miss the Sainsbury's fish counter. I used to go after work and get some really good bargains.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Asda got rid of their fresh counter ages ago. I dont know if it made much money but still disappointing to have less fresh choice available.

Tomorrow is my last day with Argos after 6 years. My redundancy has been on the cards for about a year, as our jobs were being transferred to Manchester. 2/3s of my team were laid off in the week before Lockdown v1. 0. I was kept on as part of the transition team. We were due to finish up in August, but due to Covid, it was extended to this week, just in time Lockdown v2. 0.

I'd say most of these redundancies have nothing to do with Covid, but more to do with the rolling out of the store in store plan. This has been on the cards since the very start of the Sainsbury's buy out.

I'll say this about Sainsbury's, they aren't as good as Argos. If the team I've been dealing with in Manchester is a guide to the rest of the company, they are happy to muddle along with a success rate of 60%. Their attitude is pretty much "strawberry float it". I've spent the last few months just swearing on Skype and muttering FFS on Teams.

There's a proper fishmongers in Liverpool, but it's very expensive (can't fault the quality at all mind) and they close so soon after I finish work at 16.30 so they're packing away if I can get there in time. Supermarket fresh counters were a nice compromise.

My local Argos has been closed since the first lockdown in March so I'm not surprised if that one closes for good. It's a shame because the same-day delivery was great but I'm not sure if the one in the next town does that here.

Yeah, it will. It is all part of the Hub and Spoke system. One of the reasons Sainsbury's bought us was the digital distribution network.

Sorry to hear about your redundancy Os. I have only heard good things about Argos as a standalone company - shame things went sideways with Sainsburys.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

Turning Argos into some sort of Sainsbury's sub brand seems like a bit of a self own.

Makes Morrisons with their "Market Street" stand out a bit more if all the other supermarkets close their counters.

(until Morrisons also close theirs)

I've actually started to get more into Morrisons as their fresh food stuff seems way better than anything the other Supermarkets offer. I really hope they don't change their counter style stuff.

I started shopping in Morrisons more pre-Covid as they were at the time the only place I could get a hot sausage roll, coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnut.

Not enough supermarkets do a hot counter (unless you want a whole chicken or something).

I just realised this means the hot counter at the Southend Sainsbury's is probably going to go. That was one of my favorite places to get lunch as it was pretty cheap and I didn't have to heat anything.

Wonder how many of the Argos job losses are down to COVID, and how many are down to mismanagement by Sainsbury's? Always thought Argos was doing quite well before the takeover. That being said, their website and delivery system is awful, as well as buying from their eBay site. Using them has me thinking "I want to give you my money, why are you making it so awkward for me?". :x :fp:

No chance of that happening since Market Street has always been one of their main pillars and it propped them up for years when everyone else but them were doing online delivery (which they're STILL in the process of rolling out across the country, only just got it in my area in May)

Has anyone ever used a supermarket salad bar, BTW? I've always been sceptical.
