PS4/Xbox One First Impressions - 'Rock Band 4'
We don’t usually have impressions of a game immediately after it has been announced, but then again, most developers don’t usually offer direct access to project leads before announcing a new game. For Rock Band 4, we sat down with Daniel Sussman, the project manager at Harmonix who is responsible for the overall game, and discussed where the franchise is going, what to expect in the new game and why now is the right time for Harmonix to re-introduce the Rock Band franchise.

Although he was not able to demonstrate any gameplay or talk specifics about game features, Sussman did explain Harmonix’s vision for Rock Band 4, the plan for DLC and details around hardware compatibility.

First and foremost, Sussman confirmed that Rock Band 4 will feature full compatibility with all previously purchased DLC. This not only includes individual tracks, but it also includes the disc exports from both Rock Band and Rock Band 2.

"If you bought a Rock Band song, it should be yours in Rock Band 4," said Sussman. "Everything that you have already exported will come over."

He told us that behind-the-scenes work for the DLC transfer, known as “legacy entitlements” has already begun on both PSN and Xbox Live. This includes everything from ensuring that previous purchases are properly migrated to the new consoles, as well as dealing with a file format change for Rock Band 4 and reviewing every piece of content. Just like any other DLC, songs have to pass submission requirements from each of the console manufacturers.

"The technical logistics of rebuilding this library are substantial," said Sussman.

Harmonix is working through the core catalog of Rock Band DLC first, but plans to convert RBN songs as well. RBN songs will be converted after all of the core catalog has been finished.

One big question mark as far as DLC is concerned is Rock Band 3. Sussman told us that there are currently no plans for a Rock Band 3 disc export. However, he qualified that with a caveat, saying that Harmonix wanted to prioritize the items that were important to its fans. If fans want to see a Rock Band 3 disc export, then let Harmonix know via sources such as Twitter and the official Rock Band forums.

On the hardware side, Harmonix is working to enable compatibility with legacy hardware. At this point Sussman could not confirm 100% compatibility, but he said the goal was to ensure that PlayStation 3 owners could use their existing hardware on the PlayStation 4 and that Xbox 360 owners could do the same with Xbox One. Harmonix recognizes that hardware is a big investment, much like DLC, and doesn’t want to require players to re-buy things that they already own.

"We think that there is a lot of value in the [Rock Band] software," said Sussman. "Your hardware and your DLC content though, if you're already bought it you should be able to use it."

As we chatted about hardware, Sussman focused on the core components of Rock Band: guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Although he would not confirm that keyboard support was out, he did make an effort to avoid speaking about the keyboard. We also discussed the Rock Band pro features, and Sussman hinted that those would also not be returning in Rock Band 4.

Harmonix’s vision for Rock Band 4 is firmly in the “accessible game” territory. Even though its technology has been used in games like Bandfuse, which support real guitars, Sussman and his team believe that playing with game controllers and playing with real instruments are two separate experiences and should be treated as such.

In addition to planning backwards compatibility for existing Rock Band hardware, Harmonix has also struck a deal with Mad Catz to produce a new line of Rock Band instruments for the PS4 and Xbox One.

"We are working with Mad Catz to develop a suite of new controllers as well," said Sussman.

When the conversation shifted more towards the game specifics of Rock Band 4, Sussman spoke in generalities, but Harmonix’s PR man, Nick Chester, stepped in to say that the company was targeting three different groups of players:

  • People who play Rock Band at parties.
  • People who play by themselves to chase scores.
  • People who enjoy the campaign narrative.

Things that we can expect to see in Rock Band 4 include a full campaign as well as access to all songs right off the bat. Online play will also be supported. Harmonix is also looking at possibilities for exporting performances (we saw that functionality in Fantasia), but there is nothing concrete on that feature right now as it is not a core element of the game.

Of course the big question hanging over the room was “Why now?”

"We knew it was a matter of time,” said Sussman “We were waiting for the right time to strike."

Perhaps the major difference between the previous generation and Rock Band 4 is the fact that Harmonix isn’t viewing Rock Band 4 as just another entry in the series, rather the developer sees Rock Band 4 as a platform to support the Rock Band brand going forward. As a result, it is important for them to get this right, because Harmonix is planning for it to have a long life span.

"We can do a lot of things that will sustain Rock Band 4 over five to seven years," said Sussman.

Without seeing any actual game code running, it’s impossible to say how closely Harmonix is tracking towards its goal, but Sussman seemed confident in what the team was doing. He was also very open regarding the reasons behind wanting to do Rock Band 4. Assuming the final game lives up to his vision, we may just see a resurgence in plastic guitar sales later this year.

Rock Band 4 announced for PS4 and Xbox One
Harmonix's long-awaited reunion show.
Rock Band 4 has been officially announced by series developer Harmonix. It's coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later in 2015.

It will support old peripherals (not confirmed and adaptors will be required if it happens - according to an IGN article I've read), though Mad Catz is creating new ones as well.

Better yet, it will allow players to import all their content from previous games on PS3 and Xbox 360 into this long-awaited series resurgence. Harmonix said Rock Band 4 will support over 2000 tracks released since the 2007 launch of the original game. The previous Rock Band game, Rock Band 3, launched five years ago in 2010.

We caught up with the game's project manager Daniel Sussman at GDC for further details on why Harmonix thinks now is the time to rejuvenate Rock Band and what's changing in this latest iteration.

"After taking some time off, it was really interesting to kind of come back and play the games that we bled and sweat over for years and years and years. Two things emerged very quickly: One was 'holy motherf***, these games are FUN!' Sussman exclaimed.

"At the same time we were able to be quite critical of the work that we had done and saw lots of room for improvement. And that was really important to us as well because we are all creative people and it was important for us to be able to sink our teeth into to something that was deserving of the 4 at the end of the title. We didn't just want to rehash Rock Band 3 for new consoles. We felt it was really important for us to evolve the gameplay in a way that would be interesting."

So what's changed? While Harmonix has yet to spill the beans on the exact new mechanics to this storied franchise, Sussman hinted at some areas he found lacking in the series' previous efforts that Harmonix is addressing this time out. One of these is that the developer really wants to encourage a greater sense of collaboration between players.

"One of the most magical elements of being in a band is knowing that your drummer is listening to you and caring about what you're doing," he explained. "It's not just about playing your part with blinders on. It's really about a social vibe in the room where people are aware of and interested in what other people are doing. I think it's a thing that's kind of implied by Rock Band play, but not explicitly supported by the game.

"When I watch people play Rock Band what I see is four people sort of playing a single-player game in the same room. The relationship between the drummer and the bassist is not as connected as I think it can be. So that's an area where I think there's a lot of room for improvement from a game design standpoint."

Another place where Sussman found previous Rock Band games missed a beat was in player agency over the song. In prior games the player was merely following orders dictated by the on-screen prompts. While it's not clear the exact form this will take, Sussman hinted that there will be ways that players can put their own unique spin on a song.

"The other area that I think is really ripe for innovation is in the realm of player expression and the idea that music really is a performative art form and that the output is a reflection of the input," he explained. "If you're trying to play them the same way every single time there's always subtle differences. That's a thing that as a musician I get a big kick out of - sort of doing some little thing to make this song my own. I think that's an area where Rock Band can be improved: looking at ways to give players a little bit more sense of ownership over the content.

"What I found is that if you can figure out a way to give players a sense of ownership of the content, that improves the experience," he added. "It's a really powerful thing."

This sounds an awful lot like the territory Harmonix explored in its Fantasia game last year. When I asked if Rock Band 4 will borrow ideas - if not mechanics wholesale - from this previous effort, Sussman remained cagey on the details but admitted that non-Rock Band projects were hugely influential in helping the studio arrive at where it's at for Rock Band 4.

"I think it's been healthy for the studio to get away from Rock Band for a little bit and get our hands dirty with a couple of other really challenging creative problems to solve," he said. "Fantasia certainly had its fair share of those and I'm really proud of the work that we did to really rip the rug out from what people can expect from a music game, and to give control out to players. I think that's phenomenal. It taught us a lot about how to do that well."

The lengthy gap since Rock Band 3 five years ago means that Harmonix wants this to be more than just a numbered sequel, but a platform for a whole new generation of Rock Band. "We have a long-term play here. We're not thinking about about Rock Band 4 as a release that will be then supplanted by Rock Band 5 next year," he stated.

"We really are taking the long view and positioning Rock Band 4 as the Rock Band for this console generation. We think we can support our audience through a series of title updates and content updates that expand the feature set over time as a function of [the] dialogue we have with our community."

So why is this the time to bring the Rock Band back together? Sussman said Harmonix did its research here and noticed there was still a large fanbase for the series.

"I think the appetite never left, " he said. "It scaled, certainly if you look at sales - our sales numbers for Rock Band 3 were different than Rock Band 2 - but Rock Band 3 sold pretty well! Well enough to keep the company in business, that's for sure."

Harmonix also tried to gauge fan interest by releasing four new songs for Rock Band 3 after a two-year hiatus. And 67,000 people responded to the developer's recent Rock Band survey. "The response was overwhelmingly positive," he said. "There are a lot of people out there that are psyched for this game to come back and come back for the current generation."

Ultimately, Sussman thinks Rock Band still has legs, even if it needed to retire for a half-decade spell. When asked about its cultural relevancy, Sussman stated: "Rock Band will cease to be meaningful when people stop being interested in music."

The only thing that makes me sad about the whole thing is that I vastly prefer GH guitars over RB guitars. I'll pay whatever it costs to make it work on the Xbox One!

Fortunately for you, they're making a new GH game - you could always just grab a new peripheral from Activision.

Anyway, what songs do people want to see in the new Rock Band? I know we've seen a lot of Alice in Chains in the past, but I'm a massive, huge fan of this song and desperately want to see how well it would translate into a Rock Band game:

My all time number one request would be 999 by Kent, but since that's never going to happen I'd settle for Lose Control by Ash.

Dat solo.

Just remembered I have a French language copy of Lego Rock Band and tried to import my songs, but apparently it's been more than five years since that came out(!!!!) and it's no longer available. I also don't have the working Dani California - anyone know if that's still recoverable?

If you e-mail their support guys (I'm on my phone so I can't get the link, but if you google the Dani California issue you should find a link to it) and they should send you a code you can input to get the european bonus tracks working again (Perfeckte Welle, Hysteria, Dani California, etc). It takes them a while to get back to you, but they're still sending codes out, I got one about a month or two ago.

I checked my e-mail and apparently already have a code but it's too long to fit in the RB redeem code function(also it's only Dani California that broke for me). I'll try it in the XBox on the main menu.

I've only got into Alice in Chains in the last year and a bit. Wish I'd done it sooner so I could have played the track packs that came out. Nutshell is an awesome song. Anything off the Unplugged album would be cool as well.

I'd also quite like to see some songs from the early GH games that haven't made it over to Rock Band yet. For example: Unsung, John the Fisherman, War Pigs (an original version) and Who Was In My Room Last Night?

That came out as DLC back in 2012 and should still be available for purchase, mate.

Interpol turn on the bright light album was criminally undersourced - I wanted Untitled, Obstacle 1 and NYC as well. However Slow Hands would be a bonus!

U2 songs would be ace.

i wonder if they will do album releases again.

All the songs from that album are available, but Come As You Are and Lithium are the Unplugged versions.
