20k???? Is that a typo!!? Pretty fast though hahaha. My 10k is about 50-55 mins but i think in a competative 10k i may be able to break into the 40s. I did a 22 min 5k other day, almost got hit by a car though as got confused by a traffic light (i thought it qas red for traffic but the feeder left turn had the green arrow). Thats the trouble with jogging around the city at night.

Lmao yes it is a typo

Hey everyone, absolutely novice runner here and looking for a bit of advice.

I got given a £50 voucher with the option to redeem it at quite a few places and I’ve been pondering giving running a more serious go for a while now and I thought £50 would probably get me a decnet pair of running shoes?

I’ve had a quick look on Adidas’s site as that’s one of the places I can use the voucher on and saw these, currently 50% off.

https://www.adidas.co.uk/solar-drive-sh ... elSize=7.5

Are these a decent pair of shoes for a new runner? Or should I be looking for another type of shoe? I don’t plan on going off road currently but who knows if that’ll be something I fancy in the future so these being urban use would probably suit me ok for the time being.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

It might be useful to goto a sports shop that do gait tests. - Where you try on different shoes, do a bit on a treadmill and they video your feet. They then determine if you pronate (or something) meaning what level of support you should have in your shoe. It can stop you from getting injured if you do start doing lots of running. Most specialist running shops do them, My local DW sports also does them. But that might not help with your voucher. I myself use a fully supported (other being natural and semi supported) shoe and the two makes that i have are Asics GT1000 and Brooks Adrenaline GTS.

I cant offer an opinion on the adidas you posted. I hate buying shoes online - I really have to go into a shop and try them. However the last pair i bought where a generation up from the asics i mentioned, so i was 99% sure on the fit, feel etc and I did a DW sports store collect online order so i could send them back if required.

EDIT: I do mainly road running, and pay £80-100 for my shoes.

Thanks for the advice, I wasn’t even aware some shops even offered such a service to try and get you the best shoe for your feet, certainly something to look into in the new year, I’ve got a couple of sports shops a few miles away but I don't know if any of those offer a fitting service, I suppose trying them on and getting a bit of a feel for them is better than nothing though. As for the voucher, I haven’t decided where to spend/redeem it at yet (got it through work, so I’m not sure if it’ll be a card they actually send out to you or a code to redeem online).

New years day parkrun double today. Got a 22:52 PB at the first venue. The second venue got a record attendance. For some reason Parkrun is getting popular.

I keep getting a burning sensation on the outsides of both my feet after about a mile of running. It's happened for some time but had gotten more painful recently.

I've tried googling but nothing has come up. Does anyone know what it might be?

I might go and get another pair of running shoes to see if they're the problem.

How's everyone's 2019 looking?

My plan is a second attempt at the Fox ultra (38 miles) in April. I ran it last year as my first race (other than a half marathon in 2011) and it was tough, a few things went wrong but I got to the end in 8hr 40. I'm aiming for 7:30 or under this time.

Next is The Omen 66.6 ultra in June. It's a 66.6 mile race along the North Down's Way with some really nasty hills. I've never run that far or done a race with so much elevation so just finishing will be challenge. Previous winners complete it in around 14hrs so it's going to be even tougher than the distance suggests.

Finally the Thames Trot (48 miles) in October. I ran it last year in 9hr 45. I think if the rest of the year goes well then I should be able to knock an hour off that.

Not heard of that before, but it could be the shoes.
Having a couple of different shoes and rotating between them is supposed to be a good practice.

I would personally go see a physio as you never know it could be mechanical.

Did you ever get this looked into?

I had to scrap my long run today, sounds a bit odd but a mate bear hugged me on Friday way to tight and I know have discomfort on my right hand side/lower back.

I'm quite annoyed and it's 5 weeks untill my half marathon in Cambridge

I got a new pair of running shoes and have stated to run with my orthotics in opposed to relying on the shoes own support insoles (which I've never done before), then have been doing some more calf stretches in the gym (and also lost a couple of kg). Managed to do a 10k last weekend without feeling anything, so hoping it's sorted.

Looking forward to get back to the Park Runs. Should now be able to get under 25 minutes again (managed the first 5k of my 10k in about 24:30- and that was over hills).

Been doing some running every weekend so far this year. Did 9.4k last week after I miscalculated the distance of the route... so thought I'd do 10k this weekend. But after 5/6k my ankle started to ache. Stopped and wiggled it for a bit, ran another 1k but it was still hurting and getting worse if anything so decided to stop.

I don't think I twisted it during the run, so not too sure what the issue is, feels like the outside of my (left) ankle. Possibly tendonitis, but that seems a bit much as I don't do that much running and most places seem to say it is from over training and suggests 4 weeks off.

Any other ideas?

I don't know specifically what that could be but if you don't do much running it's usually best to ease up and recover if you feel an injury coming on. Might not need 4 weeks though. If it was me I'd maybe try a slow run at the weekend but stop right away if you notice any pain. If it's still bad then take a couple weeks off or see a doctor/physio.

I've been a bit slack with the running recently. I'm still getting long runs in at the weekend (and making sure they are hilly!!) but the cold and dark is putting me off weekday runs. I've started a cycling class once a week and also do kayaking on a Saturday, so they both help with general fitness, but I need to massively up my running mileage!!

Got my ParkRun PB of 23:01 yesterday. My old PB was 23:08 from 2015, so I'm pretty chuffed. Would like to run a sub 45 minute 10k this year, and considering that I'm still about 8-10kg overweight, losing that I reckon should get me below that.

Are there enough people to do a GRCADE London Parkrun?
