Congrats Spinny!

After four years or so, I've completely lost my love for running or any motivation to do it... Everything I did was working towards London this year and since then, I just don't find any enjoyment in it. Any ideas lads?

Why did you start running and what did you enjoy about it out of interest?

You can't force these things but have you tried just going for an easy run? Run slow, don't push yourself one of those effortless ones where your not killing yourself and take the world in

I find I always need a goal to keep going, knowing there's some sort of race on the horizon. Even if I've got other goals, such as weight loss, having something that is more closely correlated to how much I run has been the best motivator (especially since I do races with my family, so I don't want to get worse in comparison to them).

Long story short - one of my friends passed away after a shitty cancer battle and I decided to do Cancer Research UK bits - ended up doing nine or ten half marathons, then did London this year for Retina UK.

It has previously offered a good way of clearing my head and, living in Winchester, I knew routes where I could run to the middle of nowhere within a couple of miles. Now living in central Oxford, I don't really know any routes here and hate not knowing where I'm going on a run.

I just feel like I achieved my running goal and then took a break, and now I've lost a large amount of my fitness (and gained a bit of weight) and I'm just very *meh* about the whole situation!

Not sure what it's like around Oxford but have you thought about trail or fell running? Sounds like you've done a lot of big road races so a change of scenery might do you some good. Off-road running can be refreshing because there's not as much emphasis on times or paces.

And I would always recommend looking at local running clubs as well, especially if you're struggling for routes. But ultimately running is a hobby for the vast majority of us so it's normal for motivation to come and go, especially after something monumental like London.

Managed a 32mile long run last week, with quite a few steep hills. Furthest I've run outside of a race. I was testing Tailwind for nutrition and wasn't sure at first (doesn't taste strong so feels like you are drinking plain water) but seems to have done the trick and got me past the 20mile mark I usually struggle at.

Have you tried parkrun? The stats tracking is good, - motivation to improve/collect more stats.

Wilmslow 10k today, 37:16 - four seconds away from my PB but pleased to be back at the level I was at a few months ago after a lull in the summer. I was 1:43 faster than in the same race this time last year, so happy with my progress and looking forward to 2020. :toot:

I managed to sign up for Escape From Meriden 2020.
24 hrs to get as far away as possible as the crow flies using any route you like. 90 miles is the target.

Thanks, I'm some way off your feats of endurance though! :msgreen:

Someone in my club did that this year. They got to Wythenshawe (south Manchester) and finished 13th overall.

Just had a look, are you going to do the "chained" option? :dread:

Nope, solo for me. Even if I wanted to do chained I don't think I could find anyone else mad enough to join me.

My goal will probably be to get home (Guildford) as that is right on the 90 mile point, and initial route planning suggests I can get there in about 100 miles. Doubtful that I can actually do it but who knows.

Been getting more into running lately but just went for a run in -1 in shorts and t shirt and shitfuck, within about 10 minutes my calves had completely seized up. Can barely move now they're so sore :slol:

How was 2019 for everyone and what are your running goals for 2020?

For me 2019 started off well. I ran The Fox Ultra for the second time and 1hr 20m quicker than previously. However, my two races after that both ended as DNFs. The Omen 66.6 was a hot day and the hills destroyed my knees about 32 miles in. I then focused on hill training for the Dorset Ultra+ but completely underestimated how big and steep those hills would be, again my legs were destroyed. I called it a day at 28.5 miles.

I think I improved as a runner in 2019 even if the race results don't show it. My problem was lack of hill training and entering races that are slightly beyond my capabilities.

2019 (vs 2018)
Distance: 843 miles (+21)
Elevation: 101,000ft (+80,0000)

Goals for 2020:
- No DNFs. The Omen 66.6 is my main DNF risk as I only got halfway last year. Hopefully a year of training and experience will get me to the end this time.
- PB at The Fox (38.5 miles). It will be my 3rd run of this race and is a fairly easy trail course, so a good indicator of fitness. 7hr 18m is my PB, I'd like to be under 7hr this time.
- Run 100 miles (90 miles as the crow flies) in Escape From Meriden. This is probably my most unrealistic goal but on paper it sounds simple. My longest run is 10hrs and I was not moving fast at the end of that, so this may be another race where I bite off more than I can chew.

That's great, I find having Goals and something to work towards is such a great motivation.

You have some hefty challenges but if you train well and look after yourselve you can achieve anything.

2019 was awesome for me, took almost 20 minutes off from my HM PB fro. 1:48:something down to 1:28:48

5k PB lowered to 19:28

10k PB lowered to 40:48

2020 run my first marathon in Manchester sub 3 30, 9 want sub 19m 5k, sub 40 10k and sub 1:25 HM

if you believe, work hard and dont give in you can achieve anything

Started running again since the lockdown and can no longer make it to a gym. Making slow progress but enjoying it (whilst the weather is nice at least...). Never been a serious runner so any tips for people getting back into it?

Currently doing about three 5-6.5k runs a week, looking to build the total distance up to 10k one a week, just trying out some new routes around the parks near me.
