Ironically, not a phrase a certified adjudicator will say when I finish my run.

Managed my first Half Marathon of the year yesterday. Not really one for distance and only ever done 2 timed ones before and one of them was 2006.

The last one I did (June 2020) I scuffed past 2 hours (and 1 minute I think) my legs had no energy and I struggled to finish. I wanted to get under 2 hours so I was pleased to set off yesterday at a slower pace but one that I could maintain for pretty much the whole way. My time was 1:50:44 which I am very pleased with and nearly 10 minutes better than my target. I actually carried on to 22k and I was shocked to find that my legs still had life in them.

Ache a lot today though, I don’t know how anyone does Marathons and above, I couldn’t think of doing that again straight after.

New 5k PB yesterday. 21:22. Getting closer to that Holy Grail of a sub 20.

Well done, you're looking for 6.25 a mile to do that

Well done! Your 5K and HM times are almost identical to mine. I got a new 5k PB this week of 21:31 and my HM is also 1:50. I mostly focus on long distance though but after a couple of ultras in May and June I am going to work on speed for a HM in September.

How is GUCR training going?
I'm probably not doing quite enough miles but getting in lots of 20 mile long runs on a different canal and the legs are unusually niggle-free at the moment.
I think I need to just smash out a 6hr night run for a confidence boost. At the moment I get bored and head home after 20 miles of the same canal I've run a hundred times.

Knocked 5 minutes of my Half Marathon time with a 1:45:14 :msgreen:

Was originally just aiming for sub 1:50 but I set off at 1:45 pace and was able to hold it. Had to stop for a few road crossings and a lorry reversing up a drive at the end of the run, so I didn't quite sneak under 1:45. Still it was a great workout and a good indicator of base fitness improving.

Awesome, had to go one better :capnscotty:

Done something to my ankle, woke up Sunday morning with a pain that hasn't gone away so had to put running on hold.

I miss running properly :'( Last year I bought some barefoot trainers and ignored all the advice about easing in to them - I probably ran 50 miles in a couple of weeks and got some achilles tendonitis on both sides (which I've had before).

But I also get left-sided severe swelling and pain at the back of my hail at the Achilles insertion, I think it's bursitis. But despite months of rest it's never quite gone away (including a permanent pain/ache in my forefoot) - I started running again recently in shorter distances, but still have this painful pouch at the back of the heel and pain/stiffness in the forefoot on waking. Doh!

Any advice appreciated! I've tried lots of stretches and stuff I've found online, but I'm coming up to 10-months of pain now which is getting silly. I suppose I should see a GP etc.

That sucks

I struggled with Achilles tendonitis for ages. I still sometimes get pain now but I'm back up to about 20 miles a week. I think it's a bit different to burstitis but I sympathise

For the tendinitis I saw a physio specialising in running who gave me a bunch of useful exercises. What worked for me was doing heel drops, a bunch of knee and hip stretches, and one legged squats, and wearing insoles even in my normal shoes.

Games and Stuff.

If you can read this, you're too close.

So so, I’m currently undergoing chiropractic treatment for the knees and whilst I’ve been ticking over the miles I’ve not really trained to the level I would normally like. Should be fit to finish in May but no expectation over times.

I’ve just written an article for the Race Director with a few tips on completing the GUCR https://canalrace.org.uk/news/how-to-re ... le-venice/

What is your weekly mileage like?

But in general: rest, proper running shoes, easing into running if you’re new to it, increasing mileage slowly if you’re not.

Biggest difference for me by far was getting some decent shoes.

Agree on decent shoes. Also consider your form; make sure your foot lands under you, not in front.

Does anyone else have a Garmin? Was wondering how accurate people find the 'Race Predictor' stats, as randomly stumbling on mine was a pleasant surprise if they're in the right ball park (it's quite hilly around here, so there's a bit of difference between what I've done recently and these figures).
