Lakeland trails hawkshead. Got a killer hill in it which is like climbing stairs, but event has a really nice atmosphere since it's not that large (just a few hundred people per race).

I’m running the inaugural Peterborough marathon tomorrow. One of only 182 runners ahead of an expanded event next year. I’ve only done one marathon before, Nottingham in 2016, I got home in 4hrs 29mins which I was happy with as a conservative first go.

Tomorrow i’m planning to run with the 4hr pacer and try and sneak under with a 3.59 or thereabouts. The course is almost entirely flat and the weather looks to be on my side, 8 degrees and dry is forecast for tomorrow compared with the 20 degrees I faced in Nottingham. Fingers crossed!

That's my local city and where I work, I plan on doing it next year.

Good luck!!!

With such low numbers i’m a bit concerned i’ll be running on my own if I can’t keep up with the pacer and they have a zero tolerance approach to headphones which seems a bit harsh as 95% of the course is off road...

You won't be on your own, I've done a couple of ultras with less than 200 people and even then was almost always somebody nearby or in view.
Good luck!!

Quality time, well done

Well done. I came in 16th yesterday with a time of 23:07.

Im thinking of doing a half harathon next month - Theres the great Manchester run one and the Liverpool Rock and Roll. The Liverpool probably has the more picturesque route, but the medal looks gooseberry fool.

Want to get into running at some point soon. Been looking for a good pair of running earphones. I’d prefer to avoid the type that plug into your ear canal if possible - I’ve never been a fan. Any recommendations?

I see a lot of people wearing these - https://aftershokz.co.uk/

They look a bit weird to me but apparently you can hear music as well as things that are going on around you.

But of course the best music to listen to while running is the sound of nature :>

So despite me getting a decent pair of running shoes (that fit nicely, went and tried some pairs on thanks to the advice on here) I’ve finally got around to starting running as my diet only seems to be helping so much to losing the last bit of weight to get to my target (anything under 11 stone as I honestly cannot remember the last time I weighed in at the 10 stone bracket, currently weighing in at 11 stone 3 or 4 as it fluctuates daily). According to a BMI chart my ideal weight would be about 10 & 1/2 stone just for a little bit of reference, although cracking the 11 stone barrier would be ideal for now, as in general building up my cardio.

Been running most evenings this week so far, what’s the best way for building up to longer distances? I already feel like I’m pacing myself a lot better despite only having done a few days on the bounce, so far I’ve stuck to the same route just so I can see any improvements over the same route (only just over 1 mile  feeling remarkably refreshed after this evenings run though so I think I might try and push on a bit over the next couple of days) which I have noticed. I downloaded Strava yesterday so I can keep track of my progress over the (hopefully if I don’t lose motivation!) coming weeks. At the moment I’m not really interested in doing anything like a half or full marathon but I think 5k is a reasonable next goal then moving to 10k, I don’t think I’d have much interest in anything past that but who knows how I might feel down the line.

So a bit of a ramble and not a huge achievement compared to some of my the runs you guys do/post but I’m taking it one step at a time and I’ll see where I can get :)

Heard of the Couch To 5K app? There might be a few of them out there. Quite a popular way to work your way up.

Might be a good idea, only apps I’ve seen are ones where you get a week free and then need to pay, I’ll have to have a look.

strawberry float, that's gutting. Hopefully it turns out not as bad as you think in a few days?

It's been bad for three or four months but has got worse in the past few weeks. I'm turning up and giving it a go no matter how I feel, but it's going to absolutely suck :fp: I've started anti-inflammatory loading alongside the carbohydrates... Not ideal :fp:

Slightly overdue but last Sunday I was delighted to achieve my goal of a sub 4hr time at the Peterborough marathon coming home just over 3hrs 58. I was absolutely thrilled with that!

My only marathon experience was a 4hr 29 at Nottingham a few years ago which I was determined to vanquish but wasn’t sure I could improve by as much. It wasn’t easy though... I planned to run with a pacer but felt at the start that the 4hr pace was too slow so I caught up and passed the 3hr 45 pacer as my enthusiasm got the better of me. I hit the half way point at 1hr 50 and got my first stab of cramp shortly after.

After that I knew I had to just manage my run and reassure myself with the time I had in hand from the first half to achieve my goal. As the race got lonelier the longer it went on I was just left to think about my cramp and look at my watch far too much until I was running with near straight legs at the end. It wasn’t just me though, the woman directly behind me was carried over the line by two marshals who might have been the last person to go sub 4.

I’ve only just stopped feeling it today but i’ll almost certainly give it another punt next year and I can hopefully rope some friends into it!

All the best Mini E, hope you're able to run. Although this is always an option:

I've got a 38 mile race a week on Saturday (The Fox Ultra) It's the same one I did last year as my first ultra, plus it's local, so I know the course and feeling much better prepared than last year.

However, I still hit a wall everytime I reach ~18 miles with my legs in constant pain after that. So it will be tough and I'm not exactly sure what time I can expect to achieve but here are my main goals just over a week before the race:

- Complete the race without injury (I have a 66.6 mile ultra 5 weeks after this!)
- Beat my time from last year (8hr 40min) by at least an hour (7hr 40min)
- Don't stop at any aid station for more than 2 minutes.
- 26 miles in there is the biggest hill of the race. It is one mile long and I want to run it without stopping. I can do it on fresh legs, but not sure I'll be able to at that point of the race.

I'll report back next weekend with the results. :dread:
