Avon wrote:Pleased to say I finished the Arc of Attrition last weekend, a 100 mile point to point race around the south-west coastal path from Coverack (south coast) to Lands End to Porthtowan (north coast) with 4000m of ascent.

It was the total opposite of everything I like or have practiced running-wise (hills, mud, difficult coastal terrain in parts i.e. scrambling over boulders, narrow gulleys, loose rocks etc) but that's the challenge of the event. Took an eternity (around 34hrs non-stop) to complete and legs feeling sore a couple of days later.

The event was superbly organised by Mud Crew with a huge amount of volunteers, live streaming, race tracking etc although I declined to step into any of the warm cosy aid-stations with their silver service as I would never have left! Glad to have ticked that one off having DNF'd it several years ago and no need to go back to it at all.

Amazing, well done!
Arc of Attrition has been on my radar for a while but it looks to intimidating to be my first 100 miler. Most I've done is 70 miles along the North Downs and that destroyed me. One day...

Definitely one of the harder events I have participated and the DNF rate is typically 30-50%. However, I'm not fully fit yet and this tests all the areas of running I don't do/practice (or rubbish at) and I'm getting on in years and still managed to complete it so all do-able with practice, training and experience. If it's on your radar then I would build towards it. They do a 50 mile version of the race for example.

I set myself a goal of running every other day in Jan from the 1st to the 31st (16 in total) with a distance of at least 3km. Very modest distance, and wasn't keeping track of the pace or anything - It was just about getting out there. I am proud to say it was completed yesterday :toot:

Now. What should my Feb challenge be? Not sure if I want to push the distance just yet, as I quite like the loop I do and know it can be done within 25mins.

Thinking of adding in a weight training regime on my 'off' running days?

Well done, Kezzer! I planned to do 100k in December, but stopped at 15. Weather and general busyness got in the way.

Anyway, I've not set myself a specific target, but I'm going to try run as many days as possible in February. So far, that's 2 out of 3, with a 3k and a 5k nailed. I'd love to get close to 100k & get my average pace back towards my peak. February can be a lovely time to run as the weather improves!

Signed up for my first ever race, I'm doing a 10k at the end of April. When I signed up I was just hoping to complete in under an hour, but I've already achieved that in training, so not really sure what time to aim for now! Garmin seems to think I could run a 10k in 50:54 but there's no way I'd get near that at the moment - I guess that's based on VO2 and assuming optimal running efficiency?

What about 55 minutes?

You could go out at current pace and aim to run the second half faster than the first

Yeah, that's probably a good place to aim. It sounds too quick at the moment but there's still nearly 3 months to train in so I'm sure it'll feel more realistic by then!

Garmin predictions are always crazy I find, for example these are my times and PB's

5km
Garmin Prediction: 18:49
Actual PB: 20:44

10km
Garmin Prediction: 40:17
Actual PB: 43:30

Half
Garmin Prediction: 1:29:34
Actual PB: 1:41:03

Marathon
Garmin Prediction: 3:16:27
Actual PB: TBC

Did my longest run yesterday which was 32km (20m) in 3hours, don't think I could run another 10km in 16:27 to get that prediction somehow.

My Garmin predictions are way off in the opposite direction. I'm mainly running trails and not very fast at the moment so don't pay it much attention, but I did a 5 mile run with the first 5k done in 24 minutes. Afterwards, Garmin race predictor suggested I could run 5k in 25:30 despite me just going over a minute faster than that, and doing another 2 miles afterwards.

I've just finished my 4th 10k run for the month. With a few smaller runs added in, I'm at 51k for the month, so obviously my goal now has to be 100k. Today's run was a hard start, but I eased in more than my others and it felt more like the ordinary levels of effort required. Annoyingly, my Fitbit decided to swap the display, so I had no idea of my pace as I went.

Another longest run today extending my longest run to 21 miles. Just 5 more on the day to reach marathon distance but our training plan goes down from here.

less then 3 weeks to my first Marathon now. Getting nervous about fueling. Energy wise on my long runs have been great however, my legs are so tired around 20 miles.

Finally completed a virtual running challenge today, the goal was to run (jog, plod, crawl) 1,000 miles in 10 weeks (started Xmas day, ends this Sunday).

Can’t say I really enjoyed the grind of running in crappy weather every day but job done.

Hopefully, that has given me some base endurance which I can now start to build on and try and get back to previous levels of speed and fitness (relative to me of course).

Good work, Avon!

I completed 78 km in February, which I'm pretty happy with. Starting to get in a routine again. Once again, I'll aim for 100km for March, with the added benefit of improved fitness and longer daylight hours.

That's insane, well done! I think I am at 500km since January on marathon training. Last long run yesterday, 30km in 2 hours 40, first 10km really slow with the group but speed up loads after they left me.
