What features do you want? I've got a a Fenix 6X and I don't see enough improvements to convince me to upgrade to the 7.
I already can get 24hrs out of the battery with best GPS and following a route, so the solar and better battery are always welcome but not really necessary, even for ultras.
The torch sounds good but it's not a headtorch replacement so probably more useful outside of races.
Some of the software upgrades are coming to the 6X anyway. The waypoints screen would be really useful but I have found a hacky way to do that on the 6X, albeit I can only see the next waypoint, not all of them in a list.
Design and size-wise it is also almost identical to the 6.

It definitely looks like an improvement over the 6 but not a huge one. If you don't need everything it can do then the 6 or 6X might be a better buy.

Does anyone have any advice for (what I think is) recurrent achilles tendonitis/tendinopathy?

My running has been intermittent for about 2-years now, as after even two runs back my right achilles hurts a lot and often swells up again - red and warm and fat and painful every morning. I've never not had pain since a 20km run in which I injured my knee (and presumably from that but strain lower down) with bad form in the last few km.

I've tried the usual stretches and exercises, and been to a physio to no avail. Any advice/tips appreciated!

Biggest thing for me is build quality. While I love my forerunner its very plastic and doesn’t feel of high quality. With the Fenix its heavy and feels like a good quality watch when out and about normally. The GPS improvements are a massive welcome and should help against dead spots which other devices get in built up areas. Not to fussed with the Solar, my current battery lasts 2-4 days.

Yeah I feel this :(

As well as the normal ankle drops etc, I think exercising other parts of my leg helped - I like single leg squats and knee specific exercises

Also I now have to just run much slower - I do nearly all my training at what I previously thought was a ridiculously slow pace. It isn't optimal from a fitness perspective, although I understand that lots of people recommend doing lots of slow running, so maybe it's not too bad. I can just about get away with pushing for a race or a parkrun as a one off but I have to rest after

Some combination of these has kept my Achilles injuries mostly at bay, although I'm just now getting back after 2 months out, as I managed to sprain the ankle that always gets injured by falling over a kerb :fp:

Oh yeah, I forgot the 7 has dual band GPS. From the dcrainmaker review the GPS seems good but again not as much of a game-changer as I was hoping for with dual band. Further software updates might continue to improve it though, and it's alread as good as other watches going by that review.

The build quality is good on the Fenix watches. I've had mine almost two years, wear it everyday and still it has no marks or scratches. It's definitely a sports watch though, and I've got the 6X so quite chunky, but does feel good quality.

If build quality is main concern then there doesn't seem to much changed between the 6 and 7 on the outside.

I haven't looked into the new Epix much yet but I understand that sacrifices some battery for a much better display, so could be another one to consider. I expect it's pricey though.

I guess time will tell, I’ll keep monitoring it over the next few months. The one I looked at was just the 7 solar which comes in around £660 ish. I understand the Epix is close to £1k

Going to try a 15km run tonight, not sure how my legs will hold out as both seem to be aching every run at the moment especially the gastrocnemius muscles.

I really need to get running again. In the last six months I've only done the odd park run and a 7 mile run about two weeks ago. Hoping to run The Fox ultra (38 miles) again at start of April, but it won't happen at this rate

I'm struggling so much at the moment. One day I can do the whole run without stopping , while this morning I had to stop 3 times (well walk but it's the same thing really). The dark really doesn't help as it's just so miserable.

Out of interest how far do you run a week and usually what distance? What is your schedule. IE do you go everyday? Or is it day every second day?

What are your goals? Lose weight, get faster etc?

Sounds like Chronic Exertion Compartment Syndrome

Keep weight off/lose some of the Christmas flab.

It's a 4.5 mile route, very up and down, hardly a flat area. Some bits are very steep, almost stairs steep and those are the killer parts. I currently go twice a week, but the aim once it gets lighter again is to go to Monday/Wednesday/Friday, which is what I was doing last time I was properly in to running. It was this same route but as my fitness level was higher, I was able to modulate the pace when i wanted and push more. I was really slim and fit, so I know it can be done. It's just getting back to that level which is tough at the moment. The fact it's the same route is where it also gets frustrating as I'll be almost stopped (or having to stop) on bits I wouldn't have even taken notice of before. Ill get there.

Gonna go back to Parkrun this weekend, my speed has slowed down to 5:30 per km, from around 5:00 per km before covid.

Had a funny one this morning - nearly home and there's a narrow bit that links two estates, and a guy is walking his two small dogs off the lead and walking towards me (it's 6.30 so still dark). One dog walks up to me, and the other runs off in the other direction! The owner is shouting for it, and it keeps moving away as I advance, to the point where I realise it's scared of me so I shout to the owner that I'll stop so he can get it. He catches up to it eventually and gets it on a lead.

Scaring dogs now

No races this year, I'd have liked to do one before leaving Cyprus but my timing is off.

I just ordered a Garmin Fenix 6 though, anyone got one? I'm getting the pro one. Seemed a good time with the price drop and fenix 7 release, really looking forwards to it arriving.

I have a couple more frostbite races left (it's a local winter cross country league)

I have a 10k booked in April.
I plan on booking a few more over the spring and summer.
Hopefully the 2 weekly Peterborough 5k grand Prix will be back in the summer.

If i hit my 5k and 10k target's I'll probably go for HM PB in November.

It took me a while to get back to it after lockdowns. It's getting used to dealing with the pain and being able to manage that.
