Guys I need help.

I'm trying to do some 'strength training' as I'm training for a marathon.

I'm clueless of where to start. I want to do it at home at first and not at the gym.

I went to see the lady in the gym and she gave me some things to do, I wrote them down and then thought I could youtube them. But i cannot find examples anywhere.

Can someone help me with what these exercises are?

This is what I'm struggling to find so far.

• Posterior Chain – Foot raises with a Leg Raise 12 Per Leg - 2 Side, Front, Side
• 15 x leg back pushes
• 15 x calf raises (for upper calf)

I mean, youtube just has loads of bulry gym men trying to get hench, i just want to make sure I improve my running and don't hurt myself. If you don't have any idea what these exercises are either, do you have any good websites I can go to to that have good workouts for marathon training? Thanks!

You basically need to strengthen your core but all over conditioning will help.

I find by going to circuit classes help but if you say do a Joe wicks class on YouTube that will be a good place to start as that will have exercises that cover everything you need

Thanks, I think the odds are against me getting an entry this year as most people will have their name in the hat twice due to 2020 race being cancelled, but it's definitely one I want to do at some point. I notice your name is on the entry list - no longer retired? :P

All focus for me now is on Escape From Meriden in November which will be my first 24hr race. I'm hoping to hit 100 miles but for some reason not many people do in this event, so I'm probably being optimistic

Your blog has been the biggest help over the last few years and I'm often going back and re-reading your race reports. The progress you have made since your first years running ultras is incredible. It's a massive motivation to be able to compare my Thames Trot with your old times and see that with enough effort maybe one day I too can run at Spartathlon ;)

Ha, thanks,

I’ve pretty much taken a year off racing to recover from some niggles and get my mojo back so have tentatively put in for a few upcoming races and will see how I’m feeling/faring.

So dipping my toe back into ultra running soon.

Been doing a half marathon training plan recently, did 16k last weekend (my longest distance so far) which was ok, so going to gave the half marathon a go this weekend/coming week. The plan said to do a couple of 4k runs in between which I've done but I found them a lot tougher than I had imagined  . Not sure if it the change in length and the mentality that goes with it or just tired les from the 16k, but I was imagining they would be a breeze in comparison.

If you've not fully recovered from pushing yourself then the first run afterwards is going to be a bit grim - but it'll also depend on other factors like sleep, food, flexibility, weight and speed work.

Looks like we both got in! :toot: :dread:

Escape from Meriden in two weeks was going to be my first 100 miler and first time running through the night but that has been cancelled now. So this is really going to be a step into the unknown for me. I'll definitely need to up my training over the next six months.

I did 14 Miles today. I'm slowly building up the distance for my Marathon. Next week it's 15, ta few weeks after that its 18. Not gonna lie though, this is starting to get tough and tiresome. I listened to half a bloody harry potter book this morning xD

I like running without music, just me, my thoughts and the groove of running

Yeah, same. I can't hack running without music.

Also Curls, are you mixing up your routes? Variety helps a lot.

I do mix up when I can, I'll be able to mix up a bit more as the temperature drop here. In recent times it's got to be very early or very late due to the heat, but now its getting cooler I can run in different places, if lockdown doesn't happen.

Ran my first half marathon yesterday in 1hr52, which I'm pretty pleased with. Only thing is that Strava was being a bit off on the GPS so kept saying I'd run a km when I hadn't finished that km (I mapped the route out before so knew where they were roughly) and by the end Strava said I'd done 25k

So I went by m mi band instead, I think I was actually more tired from the 16k I did in training the other week. But I have a new found respect for people doing marathons (and longer), can't really imagine running that twice over!

Did my benchmark run got the running coach thing with Garmin. Managed about 5 minutes before my lungs decided they didn't want to work any more. Legs were ok so I guess I need to slow down a bit so that I can built up lung fitness and that.

Theory is following the coach thing I'll be up to 5k in about 10 weeks, which seems like a hell of a short time given after 5 minutes I was having to walk.

If your just starting to run do walk run walk, build up slowly or else you will hate it and you will probably end up injuring yourself

Have been following the app which at the moment on monday and wednesday is 10 minute warm up (jog / walk) some cadence drills and then 10 minutes cool down (jog /walk) and fridays it replaces the cadence drills with a .5 mile run as a sort of log run day.

I'm quite enjoying it, I jog / run the first warm up as a whole now which is nice, I think friday I will be fine for the .5 as well, the cool down is walked with the odd running bit as the cadence drill (30 seconds at 150 - 200 spm) strawberry float my rythem and tire me out as they are faster than my normal jogging cadence of about 145 spm so hard at the moment.

Longer run from the app today,

10 min warm up of walk / jog
run for .5 of a mile
10 min warm up of walk / jog

I ran the first warmup and the .5 but as I got to the last little bit of the .5 I came to steps I'd forgotten about so didin't quite finish that at a run. Was then strawberry floating knackered so walked for the cool down, felt better for the last few minutes so managed to finish on a run which was good.

Seem each run I improve or feel slightly better about it so thats good, not sure I'd say i'm enjoying it yet but I'm certainly not hating it :D

When I first started I found that when I got to 5K and found that manageable without killing me I started to enjoy it, I feel going from 0 exercise to doing something is a massive transition for your body

Yeah a few people have said that, I'm lucky I guess that I have been going on long works every Friday since lockdown began first time round so leg wise I dont get tired its just my lungs and that that are knackering me at the moment so once that gets trained up I should be better. Every time ive had to stop adn walk has been because of stiches and that rather than legs not wanting to work any more.
