I've been using Samsung Health to track runs, and then syncing it to Strava. I've been conveniently ignoring that the times in Strava are a little bit quicker than they should be. It looks like it's because any time the watch loses GPS, Strava assumes that I'm stood still and pauses the timer. On the 10k I did last week (first one this year :toot: ) it added up to a full 2 minutes quicker, bringing my 10k time under an hour. :shifty:

I've started tracking using the Strava app instead, which fixes the problem. I regret ignoring it for so long now, I'm in a conundrum with what to do with my historic data. It'll be harder to beat my previous records... but I also don't want to clear it out and lose my fitness score and heatmaps. Think I'm just going to have to git gud.

I had the same problem with Strava when using a Suunto watch. It's because Strava insists on using their 'moving time' algorithm for every run and, like you say, if you lose GPS it will think you have stopped.

The workaround is to mark every run in Strava as a 'Race'. When you do that Strava uses your actual time instead of their algorithms.

Yeah I did find that workaround. It does show a more accurate time on the activity, but looks like it still uses the 'moving time' for segments and records. :x

I'm aiming to lose a few kilo before going on holiday in a month and a half, so running is back on for me. On getting home from Scotland I weighed about 85 kilo, with my goal being 80 or less in 50 days time. Started with a 5k run today, managed a better time than I expected, but legs are struggling, feel tight and prone to cramp. Sensible choice to do 5 and not 10 today, as I'm already up against it with time and my aims, without chucking cramp in to the mix!

I really felt like I was struggling, assumed I was slower than 6 minutes per km, only to check right at the end and see I wasn't far off 5. I look forward to getting in to the grove!

How long have you been off running? Being close to 5 mins per km is a decent pace to be starting from!

On not long in the grand scheme of things. I was running regularly until mid December and stopped as the weather got too much. I am aiming for 100km this month (together with weights at home too). It's boot camp time for me!

Looks like I can't get the position transferred, there are still places should I chose to pay but after last nights run I think I may be better off leaving it.

Went to a Runners Needs shop and got some gait analysis done and ended up getting some new running shoes (hoka ariah 6 is anyone is interested). They are more of a stability shoe as the gait analysis shoes I'm in the cusp of neutral v stability. Never tried stability shoes before (didn't actually know they were a thing...).

First time using them today amd I have a blister

Doesn't seem too bad and hoping after a couple more runs in them there won't be any issues, but did dampen my new shoe optimism

How are they now they're broken in? I'm in dire need of some new shoes and thinking I probably should get gait analysis done.

Gait analysis is worth it if you are running a lot. The right support is crucial.

I have now done three 5k runs over three days, which leaves me slightly behind my monthly goal, but I am wary of protecting my legs for the distance ahead of me over the next 45 days or so! Another one tomorrow will out me on track for the month. It's lovely to be running in spring!

Yeah they're good now, taken a couple of weeks to get used to them but glad I did it.

The gait analysis I did was free (at a runners need shop) and they weren't pushy with selling either. I got the shoes from there a week layer after some more research and they also do a 15% (I think) discount if you do parkrun as well which is good!

So I've completed a few 5k runs this month, but fell a little behind on my month to date goals. As I set my Fitbit prior to my run, I decided to attempt a half marathon. I achieved it in just under two and a half hours, which is automatically my PB, as it's the only time I've ever run that distance. 14k was the point where my legs started to struggle, but I ran to a park 10k away from my house, so there was no backing out, just slowing down! Feeling dead now, but satisfied to have got that distance ticked off! My next 5k is going to be joyous!

In the past when ive planned a half marathon route - ive made it a 2x10.5km ish lap route and left water so i can pick it upon my second pass.

Not a bad shout. I tend to run without water, but a half marathon js a little too far. Had to pop in to a shop to pick a bottle up!

Don’t run with the aim to lose weight, you often don’t lose it or even gain it.

If you’re running to feel and look healthier, then that is another matter.

True. Weight is often the measurement used, but feeling and looking healthier is the true goal! I have a slight winter belly which I want to get rid of, I suspect around 5 kilos, but if I can get rid of the belly whilst retaining the weight, that's fine!

Well done on the half marathon distance too by the way. I struggle to maintain to that distance, but on the occasions that i have its a good achievement. - And its good to be able to point to the Stava distance. Have you considered entering a half marathon so you can get the medal?

Fitbit recognised my distance, but Strava measured it 0.3 short of a half marathon. :fp: I have considered races before, but never entered. They're good motivation, but I motivate myself through targets anyway (yesterdays run was because I was behind month to date on my 100k target). A medal would be cool though.

Did a poor half marathon on Sunday. Started off okay but towards the end I tired and had some dizzy spells. First time this year having a hydration jacket on with water so probably need to get used to the extra weight.

I say poor time it was still sub 1:50 but after getting a 1:40 it's still 9+ minutes more.

Went in to the local Up and Running to get it done, it was a real eye opener! I'm over pronating, but especially bad on my right foot, which makes sense because that's where I keep getting problems with my ankle.

Out of all that I tried, went for the New Balance 860v13. Definitely feels like an improvement:

Well done for getting it done! Very easy to overlook and it's great if you can just buy normal running shoes as they are cheaper, but getting the right gear is vital!

Mine are starting to come to the end of their life. Going to need a new pair. Hopefully I can figure out what I need from my existing pair instead of going back for a repeat analysis. :shifty:

I lost 3 and a half stone purely from running, and it's the main reason I still do it. Probably helps being a fat bastard in the first place though.

Yeah, running is a key way that I have lost weight when I've needed to. It burns calories, so it is a viable solution, but much more so when accompanied by healthy eating. The thing is, run for half an hour and then look at the calories burnt off, then look at the calories in a chocolate bar. Nothing puts me off overeating or eating crap more than knowing the distance I would need to run to burn them back off!

It does need to be done in a healthy way though, of course. Understand your limits and have sensible goals, never put your physical or mental wellbeing in danger.

I'm off out for a 10k now! :D
