That was Nemesis, and you are correct, it was strawberry floating awful.

Nemesis, which is better than Insurrection simply by the virtue of having Tom Hardy in it. And, you know, cool space fights.

It's not good, but it's not dull either.

The fact that I can't remember which one of the two it was is pretty damning for both of them. But I obviously can't remember anything about Insurrection so that proves it must have been truly forgettable!

Insurrection is the one with the planet that makes everyone feel younger (and makes Bev's boobs firmer, apparently). Riker shaved his beard, so you know it's bad.

And the whole film appears to be a redo of an earlier TNG episode which names escapes me.

Ah - Who Watches the Watchers. Also not great. Bizarre choice for a film post First Contact.

Taf's right, Nemesis > Insurrection

They are both awful though. The bit in Nemesis where they fly the small spaceship, and the dune buggy sequence :dread:

Insurrection feels like they left the outtakes in the movie. Picard dancing? The Troi and Riker bit?

I find Nemesis fine as just a daft sci-fi action movie, but it is definitely one of the weakest movies.

Also, which one had the strawberry floating joystick in it? Was that Insurrection?

I laughed so hard at that bit.

Nothing wrong with using an Atari ST joystick to fly a starship  .

Riker should have never fondled that joystick. It's well established that he NEVER fondles joysticks.

Coming to the end of TOS now (Only one episode to go).

Season 3 is definitely a drop in overall quality. There are some good/great episodes here, but they are outnumbered quite significantly by the rubbish episodes.

Just got the last episode to go then I'll start watching The Animated Series (The eps are only 24 minutes anyway so I'll get through it much faster) then full-steam ahead on the rest of the original movies.

They really are going for the "throw as much gooseberry fool against the wall and see what sticks" approach aren't they.

The idea of a group of kids pottering about in a ship, visiting different planets each week and having adventures actually sounds like it could work really well as a kids show, so that might have some legs. It's the one Janeway is gonna be in isn't it?

Strange New Worlds..... I guess could be interesting.

None of these new shows I'm particularly looking forward to.

I can't wait for more Lower Decks, but I'm not in any big rush for more Discovery or Picard. I don't hate either of them, but neither of them have came close to any of the series that came before.

I don't like Discovery or Picard very much so I totally agree there. I'm only halfway through but I'm starting to believe in Lower Decks. The first episode was dire but it's been getting steadily better since.

I mean I don't hate Discovery or Picard. I mostly enjoy them, but then something has to be utter shite for me to actively hate it. I'm pretty good at finding something to like in most things.

They're both solid 6/10s for me.

Again, I liked LD from the first episode, but I've seen a lot of people say that they were unsure at the start but by the end absolutely loved it.

Running the risk of repeating myself with regards to LD, there's so much love and respect evident in the writing. It takes the piss, but you can tell these guys strawberry floating love Trek. There are some ridiculously deep references in there as well.

Yeah Lower Decks was fantastic IMO, some of the best Trek content I've seen since the 90s. As you say the love of the series past really shines through in everything about LD.

Whilst I thought the first couple of episodes weren't the strongest I still thought it was a "good show" even on those standards, the fact it gets better as it goes on is a bonus!

Finished off the original crew movies tonight. Short thoughts on all six...

The Motion Picture - 7/10 - Not as bad as I feared. It's depressingly slow, but it's probably the one Trek movie that actually feels like it's Science Fiction. Definitely more 2001 than Star Wars. Glorious model and effects work mean that visually it mostly holds up even now. The story has it's roots in the "Phase Two" series and you can tell as it very much feels like an extended episode.
"My oath of celibacy is on record, Captain. "

Wrath Of Khan - 9/10 - Still holds up as a great sci-fi action movie and it definitely appeals beyond the core Trek audience. Montalban is phenomenal as Khan and Kirk plays really well off of him, which is impressive considering they don't share a single scene (It's all over view screens). Immensely rewatchable. Great movie.
"The needs of the many, outweight the needs of the few. Or the one"

Search for Spock - 6/10 - Not very much actually happens in this. The best part easily being the "theft" of the Enterprise. But it's still mostly ok. Nimoy directed it and everyone from the main crew gets their moment to shine. Not bad, but it's just a bit bland really.
"You Klingon bastards, you've killed my son!"

The Voyage Home - "Nu-clee-ur Wessels"/10 (8/10) - Gleefully silly. As with III everyone gets a moment to shine and it's nice to see one of the movies not ending with a big space battle or fight. Great fun and always worth watching.
"Double-dumbass on you!"

The Final Frontier - 5/10 - Just really meh all the way through. Sections that make no sense, a plot that also doesn't really make sense, dull villain... There are a few scenes here and there that are good but it's just so meh. I don't hate it, but it's easily the worst of the first six.
"Look Sulu, the sun's come out"

The Undiscovered Country - 8.5/10 - Fabulous send off for the original crew. Easily the most interesting story of the six it's fantastic. Christopher Plummer hams it up beautifully as the Shakespeare quoting General Chang and Kim Cattral puts in a good turn as Lt Valeris. It's also nice to see Michael Dorn cameo-ing as the Klingon defence advocate. A worthy way to wrap it up for them all, even if we do get to see a few of them again over the years. Wonderful stuff.
"Cry havoc, and let slip the Dogs of War."

They're mostly good, with only the duff Final Frontier really letting the side down.

So yeah, onto TNG now. :D

Almost through season 3 of TNG now.

Just watched "The Offspring"

It's amazing just how consistantly good TNG is from Season 3 onwards.

Yeah season 3/4/5 is probably the sweet spot where they really know what they are doing but haven't yet fallen into too many tired traps!

I'm halfway through season 3 of DS9 now and it's really starting to feel good now. I'd actually forgotten how early they seeded all of the stuff with the Dominion and the general concept of doing long form story telling in this, even in season 2 they were pushing the boat out with doing things like the 3 part Circle story. It's a real shift when coming off the back of the largely "story of the week" format from TNG
