Lower Decks is really good. I dunno if you haven't tried it or whatever. I appreciate it's very fanservicey, but as someone who grew up with 90s Trek it's pandering to me.

I watched it all and hated pretty much all of it.

I only started watching Trek a couple of years ago though, so I appreciate that the nostalgia factor isn't there for me.

And my hatred of Lower Decks is now basically just a meme between me and Cheeky Devlin.

Ah ok. I've got friends who dislike the edgy adult animation trend, Rick and Morty style shows etc. And because the animation style is similar they assume that the show is too and won't try it.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Yeah, when I was watching it I was convinced Rick and Morty were going to show up at some point.

I'm just getting to the end of S2 of Voyager in my first run through and I've got to Tuvix. I was on a couple of Star Trek meme groups a few years ago and Tuvix was always put forward as the dictionary definition of bad Trek, but the episode was awesome! It is a clunky thought experiment of a premise but it was well acted and the end painted everyone in a very challenging light - nobody comes out looking good. Was very pleasantly surprised.

I think a lot of people overlook how clunky the whole of Voyager was in the early years. That episode doesn’t really stand out as a bad one in my eyes. I love Voyager and it’s easily my favourite Star Trek but I can see how, much like TNG and the death of Yar Voyager properly settles in once Kes leaves (to go back to Yorkshire I assume) and they find Seven.

I assume it was just fedora-wearing misogynist neckbeards on Trek boards hating on Tuvix because the reception page on Wiki has some people putting it in the top ten Voyager eps. I can see why from a philosophical standpoint as it does ask a hard question with no right answer.

I'd say there was still a good season and a half after Yar died before TNG hit it's stride. I'd say it might be closer to Wesley leaving.

I'm almost going in expecting to be disappointed by Voyager from what I've heard so I'm actually bouncing the other way. There was a run of about five eps in a row where Janeway was doing her stupid governess holodeck porn with those irritating kids which was crap, and it's obviously finding it's feet, but I really liked the Kazon traitor subplot, and the episode where that came to a head with Neelix doing journalism was really fun.

Kes is an irritating character but I don't think it's Jennifer Lien's fault. It jars that she's able to basically do Nurse Ogawa's job with zero formal training - she goes from "hey doc what are a meddsinn?" to "I've isolated the DNA strands from the transporter buffer as you asked Doctor yadda yadda yadda". And at the same time she also gets psychic training from Tuvok - it's a wonder she has time to get groomed by Neelix!

I just dug out my notes on the episode, so here's a sneak preview of my Voyager thoughts before the rewatch thread gets there.

----

I didn't think much of this until the last 10 minutes or so.

I found Tuvix quite creepy at first and struggled to shake that feeling. The premise was also a little too ridiculous.

But those last 10 minutes were very well done. It's obviously a situation that we'll never be in, but there was a very big moral question there. Tuvix wanting to live was heartbreaking. And as much as Tuvok and Neelix deserved to live, I think Janeway was very wrong to kill Tuvix just to get them back.

It's the last 10 minutes or so of that episode that have stuck with me, so I've no idea if I was being harsh on the majority of the episode.

The Doctor is my favourite Star Trek character so him getting the mobile emitter was a big deal for me. He has some cracking episodes later on that aren’t just retreads of Data AI plot lines.

I still can’t get over the overexplanation of every plot point as if a non-trek viewer is going to tune in to it at this point. I’m not a snob, I just don’t like the writers assuming I’m an idiot (I like people to come to their own conclusion….)

The Doctor is consistently awesome so far

The worst character is Janeway's hair :dread: - the bun with the big quiff is insane...

He kind of reminds me of Frasier in some ways.

Thankfully Janeway’s hair gets under control later on.

I always wondered if that bun is Kate Mulgrew’s own style. She has it done the same way in an old Cheers arc where she plays a senator who dates Ted Danson.

My favourite TNG episode is Cause and Effect which guest stars Kelsey Grammar.

I therefore started to wonder if Cheers was in fact a Holodeck program someone left running and it gained sentience. It would explain how Janeway and Bateson were both within it. Janeway romancing the holographic barman isn’t out of character and Bateson would probably spend a lot of time in a bar after travelling forward in time 90 years and realising everyone he ever loved had died.
