Today I learned there were Dolphin crew members on the Enterprise-D

I want to see them in Lower Decks now.

They missed the boat with dolphin crew members since SeaQuest DSV did that with their dolphin which could somehow communicate with the humans bullshit.

I'm still enjoying my slow and steady DS9 re-watch at the moment, at the half way point of season 3 now and it's actually better than I remember (and I loved it the first time around!)

That said one of the things that is annoying me more than I remember is Chief O'Brien. The dude is a straight up dick to Keiko some times, "hey, fancy going on a botanical expedition for a few months? I'm pretending it's for your benefit but actually I just want some peace and quiet - so yeah take our daughter with you even though it would be much easier and more sensible for her to stay here with me... Thanks! Oh and BTW I'm going to be a dick about it when you get back and for some reason aren't ecstatically happy about your time away!" Also he seems to have suddenly become an expert in everything. TNG got away with a lot because it was broadly plausible that between the likes of Data and Geordi they could come up with explanations and wild theories for some of the things they encounter, but here when a former transporter chief starts spouting gooseberry fool about chroniton fields and time travel it's just a bit too much of a stretch!

Just started season 4 of DS9, The Way of the Warrior is an absolute top notch double episode to open with :datass:

You really are in for a treat.
DS9 really shows how good Trek can be with some great episodes covering some meaty subjects.

Oh I know, I've seen in before but it was 20 years ago so it's a nice mix of familiar and forgotten!

S4 is where DS9 gets amazing. The Way of the Warrior is fantastic. The Visitor as well :datass:

Strangely enough I've been working through the best Trek show again myself. Almost finished S4 now.

One thing I was surprised at is how much I enjoyed S1 & 2. Don't get me wrong they're still the weakest seasons, but they're not bad. I'd say they're far more consistant than TNG Season 1 was having just rewatched that recently as well.

The Non-Starfleet characters are compelling right from the start and it's only really the story's that are perhaps a bit weak. The change of tone from TNG is very welcome and the fact there are characters who don't like each other is a nice change.

Season 3 is better as the Dominion finally start to get involved, then season 4 really ramps up with Worf showing up.

I like the way so many problems are solved with an inverse tachyon beam.

I think it does edge TNG in terms of having a less gooseberry fool opening two seasons, but it's still not great at the start. Plenty of the characters go really underused and underdeveloped at the start: Dax in particular might as well have not been there for most of the first season.

They really start to learn and lean into their strengths once we get into season 3. It felt like it took them a while to find an effective mechanism to replace the "random discovery of the week" format that TNG easily facilitated. There are only so many times you can do an episode about Bajoran politics/religion when there isn't really much at stake before it gets a bit dull.

They're quite different shows. I'd still say TNG pips it to the post - seasons 4, 5 & 6 of TNG simply contain the majority of the best sci-fi ideas and deep questions that ever existed in the canon.

DS9 gets deeper into its characters longterm arcs than TNG, but there were times (even in its best seasons) when I still felt the show needed a few extra jolts of some kind. Something to shake things up a bit more.

I do still love it, but there are far fewer memorable moments and concepts compared to TNG.

Don't forget to reverse the neutron flow or you'll have a warp core breach :x .

And of course the use of the ever versatile "deflector array" which can apparently do strawberry floating everything you might ever need it to!

Continuing our slow rewatch of TNG and have made it to the end of season 5. I will fight anyone who says Inner Light is not top tier sci-fi. Had the mrs in floods.

Time's Arrow is my personal favourite of the entire series as well, just for nostalgia reasons as it's one of the few I remember watching with my grandparents as a very young kid.

I think it's considered one of the best episodes in Star Trek. I think it is the episode that solidified Picard as my favourite captain.

Contagion is one my favourite episodes of TNG because the big solution to save the day is to just perform a System Restore on the Enterprise.

Plus it’s one of those many one off episodes that had the potential for much wider implications if they wished to return to it, beyond that DS9 sequel.

I'd kind of like to know if Starfleet kept tracking the Whale Probe after it left.
Where did it go?

Lower Decks started back on Amazon yesterday with the episode "Strange Energies"

Pretty happy with it overall and as always there were some really nice references and Easter Eggs.

The Jem Hadar ship during Mariners "work out program" was a nice blink and you'll miss it moment.

The whole plot with Ransom getting god powers being essentially "Where No Man Has Gone Before" from TOS, which they make absolutely clear as they talk about Gary Mitchell and Kirk dropping a rock on him

Oh and I kinda got my wish about something...

We might not have seen them but there was a very clear mention of "Cetacean Ops". :toot:

Assuming it picks up from the end of this episode, next weeks should be good too.

Boimler desperately trying to fit in with the Titan crew and make it work will be interesting, though I don't expect Frakes to be around all season. Can probably expect Boimler to get bounced back to the Cerritos at some point.
