Yeah, that was a pretty good ep. I think the show was weaker in S1-2 overall, but it still had some eps that hold up. The same is true of TNG (Measure of a Man is S2).

Whilst I think S1 of DS9 is weak it's definitely a stronger start than TNG had

Yep, DS9 attains okay-to-decent quality over a longer period than TNG, but top-tier TNG is higher than top-tier DS9. I think that's where I ended up after all these years of re-watches.

For me DS9 Seasons 1 and 2 have a handful of good episodes between them, some mostly average ones and a few real stinkers. But it does start to bring in the idea of the Dominion relatively early if I'm remembering right. Just a few mentions here and there by Gamma quadrant species.

Season 3 is where the quality begins to increase dramatically and then Season 4 and Worf showing up is when it really starts to knock it out of the park.

Its easily my favourite Trek series.

This is a fantastic episode.

I really liked S7 of DS9. I can understand why someone wouldn't, it goes pretty heavy into Bajoran religion.

DS9 almost gets the number 1 spot for me as overall best Trek.
It has some really outstanding episodes and the Dominion War is by far the best continuing story in Star Trek.

DS9 is my number 1 Star Trek series, because of how it handles war and the effects it has on people.

Those are definitely good reasons to favour it. I think my reasons for falling down on the side of TNG are to do with the myriad of sci-fi ideas and surprising invention - which has always been a big pull for me. Although it misfires at times and gets wacky, it takes me on far more unexpected journeys than DS9.

I was certainly engrossed with many of the DS9 plot lines, but TNG made me wonder about our future a lot more (and ponder things).

Maybe I'm alone but Voyager will always be my favourite. I have fond memories of TNG but Voyager was on during my formative years. That and Sliders (or Backstep) on a Thursday night on BBC2.

Having watched it again I can see how people might not get on with the earlier seasons but once the Borg popped up it really ramped up. The Doctor was alway my favourite character and I really enjoyed them exploring a piece of software as an entity. Data could was effectively an individual whereas the Doctor would have to code new things into himself. When the crew messes with his code and erases his memories it raises all sorts of interesting questions about his individuality and how violating that is.

My favourites episodes were Year of Hell (the best 2-parter in Star Trek history. Sorry Best of Both Worlds fans) and Living Witness where a copy of the Doctor has to defend himself and Voyager from the planets inaccurate historical records. The actors obviously had fun playing evil versions of themselves as well.

I do like Voyager, too. The characters that the writers bothered to write for (so Seven and the Doc, essentially) were really well done. It's just a shame about the almost total lack of development for any other character (except maybe Tom and B'elanna) in the show.

Sliders had such potential that they never really managed to deliver on. I do miss the days of the sort of 6PM weekday slot on BBC2 where you used to get great stuff like Trek, Buffy, Sliders and other fantasy/sci-fi type fare

The thing about year of hell that grates me is that all the foreshadowing from Kes is completely ignored - at no point did anyone go "oh gooseberry fool, 6 months have passed and these guys are the Krenim, let's GTFO!"

This gets brought up everytime we talk about it Voyager. I love it but it could have been something really special if they'd fully embraced the situation they were in and used it to tell stories they'd not been able to before. As it is it feels a bit TNG-lite in places.

Battlestar Galactica would tackle a lot of the stuff Voyager could have. Seeing Voyager get back to earth battered, bruised and nearly falling apart with a crew who had been through the mill would have been far more interesting.

Hell, one thing Galactica did that Voyager could have done much better was in making you care about the ship itself. There was no equivalent to the scene at the end of BG where it makes it's last jump and essentially breaks. There was genuine emotion at that point for me. Voyager had none of that.

The really annoying thing is that there were superficial nods to all of this stuff from time to time, but none of it ever stuck.

Well I for one truly felt the fear that they would run out of their compliment of 38 infinite photon torpedoes!

It would have been great if the Maquis element didn't end up getting pretty watered down.

I love this scene. It made me realise how much I loved the Galactica. She was a grand old lady :(

This, essentially. I loved Voyager probably because it was what was being shown when I was old enough to watch and understand Star Trek, so it has a nostalgic element that covers a lot of fairly obvious flaws.

I remember Sliders going downhill once Prof. Arturo left although the girl that replaced him was pretty hot.

It seems like the sort of premise that is ripe for a reboot.

12 Monkeys is a criminally underrated sci-fi show.
The show had a good overall story and the characters were all decent. It had a story to tell and has a definite ending.

If you haven't seen it give it a whirl and you may be surprised that the stupid Sci-Fi channel didn't advertise it more. I had to buy the series on DVD from the US because sci-fi UK didn't even show it even though it was the most expensive Sci-Fi show ever at the time.
