I imagine any excess biological material is broken down by the holodeck and converted to energy which is then used to make someone a pie elsewhere on the ship, lovely recycling!

That would be a hell of a holodeck system to go wrong. Imagine if it glitched and decided that ALL biological material within the holodeck is to be broken down. With people inside.

There's zero evidence for it going wrong as all the times when it appears to could just be a program on the holodeck as a training simulation about what to do if it ever does go wrong.

I watched the best of both worlds last night it was a fantastic double episode although I can't help but wonder,

why did the Enterprise survive when the Borg cube destroyed 30 odd other star ships easily? Also I don't really get why people are pushing Riker to try and get him promoted surely people would understand that it's cool to just be happy with what you've got in that future?

The Enterprise has max level plot armour so it can survive most things.
I think the reason people think Riker should move on is just that to get where he is needs a lot of ambition so it seems a bit odd that he then just stops and stays in the same job for so long.

Also, you've got a guy there who is more than qualified to command a pretty high level starship, it seems natural that people will try and headhunt him for roles.

Got back on to the TNG re-watch last night after a bit of a break, up to season 3 episode 9 now.

The Enemy was a really good episode - nice bit of tension between the Romulans and the Federation. Geordi got to buddy up with a Romulan for a game of blind man's bluff, Worf gets to demonstrate just how few strawberry floats he gives about saving Romulan lives and Picard gets to do some top tier diplomacy with the captain of a Romulan war bird - "oops, yeah sorry we let your man die, but you probably shouldn't have been here in the first place and y'know stopped lying to me all the time. Picard out"

I'm sure if Hexx had been on forums back then, he'd have been apoplectic about that, and written off TNG as the worst thing ever. When he's not complaining that it broke canon about the Klingons, of course.

I've been trying to get into Star Trek for a while. Never really watched any of the TV stuff, although I do remember getting one of the VHS board games and I liked the vibe that gave off. Still, my first proper experience was the 2009 film which I loved. I don't think I'm necessarily looking for big budget and action, but so far I've watched the first two seasons of the original series, and about half of TNG season 1 and I just can't get into it. So many of the episodes seem to be set in some bizarre world that is essential earth from a different era. I'm going to try and pick up the recommendations from LetswatchStarTrek.com and see if that improves things!

After switching to the episode guide on LetswatchStarTrek.com, I'm enjoying it a LOT more. Pretty much everything I'd watched in the first half the season was rated as a skippable by them. Now it feels more like what I always thought Star Trek was.
