I can't remember the names of the people I work with all week (seriously my memory for names is so bad I'm currently on medication to try and see if that helps) but I'll give it a go with no cheating.

Jonathan Archer
Trip Tucker
Malcolm the British guy
T'Pol
Phlox the doctor
Hoshi Sato
The dog

erm, I think that's the bridge crew. Who did I miss?

It shows the priority of my brain that I can remember those guys but not someone I work with all week :slol: .

I signed up to Disney+ and finally got to see Star Wars 8 and it was rubbish but it had Ade Edmondson in it so that makes it a 10/10 film.

It's so odd seeing the guy who I just associate with slapstick comedy on the bridge of a starship. I so wanted him to just break into the character of the lady at the hotel where he's pretending to be the bride in Bottom and gets the gooseberry fool kicked out of him.

Ohhh, me girls bits!!!

Three episodes into Discovery season 3 and this is gooseberry fool.

1. It looks strawberry floating terrible. It's a uniformly ugly looking show with godawful grading and downright distracting camera work.

2. So far it's been the same story twice: brave new world, first exposure etc. Both were poorly done and really boring.

3. These aren't real people. They all pontificate rather than speak and there's an epic, music-backed swell of pomp every 5 strawberry floating seconds.

The general idea is interesting but so far they're padding airtime like crazy, which makes me think they didn't know what to do with the situation they wrote themselves into.

I think the premise might be the shitted thing they've done.

They make no effort to explore or explain why the Federation is needed/missed - it's a brave new setting to explore

‘I just got here. I have no understanding of this place or way of life. We must go back to how things were for me’ might be the least Trek thing ever put on screen

Well, "Double dumbass on you" then.

This could be from the wrong film as I get the numbers mixed.

There's also the ever so slight problem that surely by the burn every planet is self-sustaining in regards to power and has replicator technology so apart from not being able to have a holiday on Rizza (sp?) and the ships in deep space the planets should be fine.
The planets of the burn are in the same situation humanity is in now but with much better tech so why are they so screwed?
Did nobody think to become replicator engineers at school and now they just can't be fixed?

Wrong film. IV is the good one, where they go back in time to the 80s. V is the gooseberry fool one where Shatner asks what god needs with a starship.

That's because they did that great science fiction idea where they take an established genre (in this case a World War 2 submarine film) and set it in space.

See also Pitch Black (Space-wilderness survival) First Contact (Space-Moby Dick) The Mandalorian (Space-Western, down to the Morriconi-tinged soundtrack) and Rogue One (Space-war movie)

The problem is they don't know what Dilithium is. Its not the power source, it's the regulator. You could look for alternative.

It also ignores people like Romulans who use Black Holes to power ships.

But then discovery isn't written by people who like/understand Scifi, never mind Star Trek specifically.

I think the "warp travel became really hard" premise would have worked better if it had actually isolated the various different worlds. It seemed like that was what they might go for at the start, but then the Chain and the Federation and (in the last episode) the Vulcans were zooming around all over the place, and there were even transwarp conduits (which were "dangerous" but seemed to only need some spring cleaning?!) so...?

I guess I'm imagining something like, the Discovery arrives in the future with this alternative technology, and they're the first ship in a long time able to re-explore the Alpha Quadrant. We're shown how various planets responded to their isolation. Maybe some of the warlike races were forced to look inwards and actually improved their society. On the other hand, maybe some colonies were reliant on support that got cut off and so collapsed into violence. Some worlds wouldn't change much at all. There could still be an arc to the season where they piece together information and expertise various different planets have (that they weren't able to share before!) about why the change happened. They solve the mystery and hey, maybe they fix it, or maybe the real "fix" was the friendships they re-established along the way!

I dunno, I'm not a writer, but I do think the process of imagining "what would this future be like and why?" went wrong somewhere. Weak world-building, I guess.
