I think the scoring is the most standout thing for me. TNG through to Enterprise have a similar style of music through scenes, and a similar use of it. I really miss that.

My biggest takeaway is that Chakotay was so gooseberry fool, he turned Seven of Nine gay.

I think the main problem is just the high level of expectation everyone had for the show.
Following TNG was always going to be a thankless task and the fact that it was a totally different kind of show really didn't help.

I liked it overall but it could and should have been better.
Killing a beloved character in such a brutal way was a mistake.

Even trying to take Picard at face value and evaluate it on its own terms it was just a flawed sci-fi show. The characters were poorly drawn, the plots and pacing were inconsistent, motivations for key events and choices were often muddled and overall it just really didn't seem to know what it wanted to be or say.

I've still got hopes for season 2 as there is clearly plenty that you can do with Picard and the new elements the show introduced are not entirely without merit, but it has definitely got its work cut out

I agree with pretty much of all of that. I'd like to hope they will listen to feedback about how Season 1 didn't work. I certainly enjoyed Picard more than I have Discovery.

My favourite bit was Seven asking Picard if he ever thought he regained his humanity. I loved that short scene.

Yeah, I can't say I disagree.
I hope they get away from a seeming need for constant action and have more story-based episodes next series.
Hopefully, with the return of Guinan we may see a few more contemplative episodes with moral problems to solve that require good old fashioned diplomacy.

Lastly, was I the only person that thought the Orchid thingies looked shockingly like Vorlon ships from B5?

Not much Discovery chat here this season. I think "the burn" was an interesting premise, but this season has been on a pretty consistent downhill trajectory in terms of quality. I don't want to spoil anything but the more they discover about "the burn" and the new politics of the galaxy the sillier it all seems IMO.
