Finally started watching DS9 properly (rather than whatever was on bbc2 when I was a kid) following the guide on letswatchstartrek.com, there are barely a handful of good episodes in season 1 , at least I'll get to the Dominion wars quicker

Yup. Best avoiding the majority of season 1 and 2. Season 4 is where the show really starts to get amazing.

There's a bit in that episode that makes me laugh unintentionally. The scene where the Klingons arrive, Garak's expression is hilarious.

The first couple of seasons are a bit grim in places but I do like the slow build up to the Dominion that they have and I do watch them whenever I go through them again. Just the odd mention here and there. That was well done.

As soon as they start leaning more heavily into the "serial" aspect of DS9 rather than the stand-alone style of earlier Trek is when it really starts to find its feet. Season 3 is decent, but 4 is when it hits its stride.

Easily my favourite Trek show.

I never quite gave DS9 enough devotion back in the day so I'm aiming to move on to that once I'm done with TNG (not sure I'll have the stamina to make it through all of Voyager as well though...)

Whilst I do like the idea of viewing guides that steer you toward the key episodes I still prefer to go through things in their entirety, seeing the show warts and all!

DS9 is amazing and has some real punchy episodes with characters that grow massively.
It's pure Sci-Fi and tackles some pretty heavy topics while showing some amazing special effects.

As someone who's never watched an episode of Star Trek but is curious to give it a go, am I best to start right from the beginning or is there a better place to start?

I don't even know if all of the different crews through the years are part of the same universe or if it just gets rebooted all the time.

The movies before 2009, and all the various TV series, are part of the same continuity.

The Original Series/The Animated Series is set in the mid-late 23rd century.
The movies up to The Undiscovered Country are set shortly after TOS
The Next Generation/Deep Space 9/Voyager are set in the late 24th century (approximately 100 years after TOS).
The movies Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis are set after TNG.
Enterprise is set in the mid-22nd century.
Discovery starts about 10 years before TOS.

Discovery is just awful though.

Terrible as sci fi. Terrible as action/adventure. Terrible story. Terrible acting apart from 1-2 exceptions. Terrible Characters.

Can't personally vouch for it, but watching the shows with an episode guide is the best way to go about it. I would start with TNG, in all honesty.

Edit - I'm looking through that site's TNG list and it's not a bad guide at all. Covers everything, excludes the really crap episodes

I've never subscribed to the idea of skipping episodes. When I watch something I like to experience all of it, even it's low points as there's a greater appreciation of the high points.

For Star Trek....... there is a lot of stuff to watch so unless you're happy with the scale of the task ahead I can kind of understand it.

Discovery is TV Star Trek at its overall worst. Never ever ever start with Discovery as your introduction to Star Trek.

There are individual episodes from every other series that are absolutely worse (Code of Honor from TNG, These are the Voyages from Enterprise, Threshold from Voyager, to name but a few), but as a series Discovery is bottom of the pile.

I havent seen all of Season 2 yet. I watched up to that episode where scaredy alien guy (Saru?) went back to his home planet. I just didn't have the motivation to continue.
