Sadly Lorca was a captain AND a Brit so probably supersedes her in the Royal Mail pecking order. For me I’d have chopped Lorca and Ash, tagged in Georgiou and someone from Voyager(Seven probably). I think Troi is fine for TNG, though I do love Riker.

Well into TNG Series 3 and yeah this is the good stuff. The Bonding was a genuinely affecting treatise on grief, and even relatively filler eps like Booby Trap have their moments (Worf's "I did not play with toys" burn to Picard was a real lol moment).

Full steam ahead with the rest of the series from hereon out.

Yeah the show is really solid from season 3 onward, there's always some weak episodes but the output is much more consistent and it is rare to get anything that falls to the standards of season 1 again!

That said I watched a couple more season 6 episodes last night and they were definitely in the weaker camp:

Realm of Fear - Oh gooseberry fool, another Barclay episode. Barclay gets over his supposedly irrational fear of transporters being dangerous by ... showing everyone they are dangerous as the crew of the Yosemite managed to get trapped in the matter stream! Everyone else is all "LOL Barclay, get your gooseberry fool together - nothing bad ever happens with the transporters!" despite the fact that "transporter accident" is like the base plot for dozens of Trek episodes over the years! O'Brien scaring the gooseberry fool out of Barclay with his Tarantula is fun though!

Man of the People - Ugh this was pretty terrible. Ambassador/peace negotiator Alkar mind rapes Troi to set up some kind of psychic link that transfers all of his negative feelings onto her to allow how to better perform his job. Troi becomes increasingly angry and erratic as a result which the crew initially seem to brush off as "tsk, women hey! " before eventually getting their gooseberry fool together and saving her. There was possibly room here for a good episode exploring the morals around trading the life/wellbeing of the few for peace amongst the many, but this isn't it. Alkar dies in the end which is nice but it feels like nobody ever really condemns him enough for what he did beforehand.

I love the Barclay episodes. Was just nice to have a character on the ship who has issues dealing with day-to-day life on a starship because of their condition, but has the courage to try & stick with it. The rest of the regular crew, although I love them, were so ultra-adept it got a bit predictable at times.

Yeah to be fair I've always been a bit harsh on Barclay, he does offer a lot in terms of making the crew feel more accessibly. Although how he got through the academy and managed to get a post on a ship like the Enterprise is a bit of an odd one to think about!

I like Barclay, even though he's as big a sex pest as Riker. I can't imagine anxiety was talked about on TV much at that point. I would think that's maybe another example of Star Trek being ahead of the game.

The thing is when you think about it The Enterprise would be filled with the best of the best from Earth.
It's the flagship so should be the pinnacle for anyone with any interest in working in space.

Oh, right the Earth bit.
Pretty much all the crews of the Enterprise are from Earth with the exception of a Vulcan, Klingon, Batazed and Guinan who was just a human in a fancy hat .
