I actually liked The Last Jedi. I just like being mean about it as it's amusing how you defend it.

has there been any new-EU stuff that actually explains how the First Order came about (and how they seem to have ALL THE MONEY IN THE GALAXY)? Biggest flaw of the new trilogy was how they just replaced the previous big bad with a new big bad and didn't really explain how the galaxy came to be in that state.

Would be interesting to see how it all came about, really.

I feel that defending TLJ and telling Tories to get strawberry floated is my entire persona these days.

There are some canon prequel books I think.

Yep, spot on. It's difficult to answer "who are the First Order?" much beyond "the new bad guys" based on the films. TFA should have gone into further depth on this or they could have used a standalone film to delve into it abit deeper.

"The First Order of what?" remains the biggest unanswered question in modern western cinema

They are actually turning Star Wars into a Fight Club sequel.

“The first order is that we do not talk about Leia’s space flying….the second order is that we do not talk about Leia’s space flying”

I would like to see a film that fills in the blanks between episode 6 and 7 but I think that’s what they are possibly planning with the tv series at some point. It’s a shame as although that may provide answers we get it in spectacular guns blazing movie form.

Who are the First Order? Where did they come from? Where are they getting their funding and equipment from? How did they build something massively bigger than the Death Star in such a short space of time? (it would have taken approx. 20 years to build the Death Star if you go by the prequel - original timeline) Why is the galaxy still in essentially the same state and conflict that it was 30 years ago?

Et cetera.

Functionally the first order exist to give TFA a visual tie (no pun intended) to the original trilogy. OMG STORM TROOPERS! THIS IS STAR WARS! Etc. I wish they'd had the balls to save the callback to the downed star destroyer Rey mucks about in, it's all that was really needed, but hey DAT TRAILER AMIRITE. The role of the first order should have been taken solely by Kylo and the knights of ren, along with whatever small band of followers they managed to gather together. A menace born out of the force and growing the longer it goes unchecked. Rey/everyone has to stop it, giving some point to them doing anything, because at the moment all we've got is another bloody rebellion AGAIN.

First Order should have been much smaller in scale, led by Kylo Ren and his buddies and called the Imperial Remnant.

They should have been the scrappy rebellion threatening to tilt the balance back to chaos, not the de-facto power in the galaxy against a Republic that frankly doesn't seem to give a gooseberry fool about them.

I know they scrapped the EU, but there was a lot of material there that could have been drawn from and re-worked to make something much more interesting.

"Okay, class. We have some essential reading for you all before we start our first project. The project is called The Force Awakens, and the material you will read will lead up to what happens in the project. The same will happen for our other two projects of the year. Unfortunately, we've messed up arranging everything to make sense, so you'll just have to start without knowing the lead up to the first project, and possibly even the other two as well. We have definitely just misplaced them. It's not like we're writing the lead up right at this minute as fast as we can."

As much as I like the sequels, it does seem as though every novel has explaining to do to tell us these things. Resistance Reborn (having just finished reading it) is less about rebuilding their strength than it is showing the chaos the First Order brings and showing Poe learning from the past mistakes he made to become the leader the Resistance needs. Unlike Empire to Jedi, where the transition between the two felt natural, Last Jedi to Rise of Skywalker is going to be a massive 'what the hell', simply because it won't be showing vital things. Poe was demoted in Last Jedi, pretty sure he'll be a general in Rise with no explaining. And then there's the big one. The Resistance fleet. End of Last Jedi, just the Falcon. Rise of Skywalker has already shown us a massive Resistance fleet, and it came from nowhere as seen from just the films. And I'm not sure anything the film will do to explain it away will work, as it's a massive turn around from how we previous saw things.

So, Empire to Jedi. Empire showed the heroes beaten and running. But it showed the greater fleet of the Rebellion. It showed us that we were just following one small part of the entire faction. So when we start Jedi, and see the fleet, there is nothing shocking about it. We knew about it. It doesn't have to be explained. Same thing for Clones to Sith. Out come the Clone Troopers to beat back the droids, we see them deploying for a galaxy-wide conflict. The next film then shows the conflict as still going. There's no unexplained events, with things after the massive action sequence getting some focus. Even between Sith and New Hope, we've seen the Empire rise, the birth of Darth Vader, and the two remaining Jedi (that the prequels followed) resting their hopes on the next generation. Which is then explained in New Hope through Obi-Wan's eyes and again through Yoda in Empire.

Return of the Jedi to Force Awakens? The New Republic hardly gets any mention, so there's no real feeling of anything when the entirety of it goes boom. We don't even get to hear within the films how it was the New Republic that led to the First Order rise to power in the first place. The entirety of the First Order's place within the galaxy is a pretty big thing to just not bother explaining, same as why it's a Resistance fighting against them instead of the New Republic. Massive amounts of history and lore within this period is just missing from the trilogy, and it's just going to get worse when Rise of Skywalker lands.

Still, I have the books, so I look forward to reading the novelisations of the trilogy near to when the Rise of Skywalker one releases.

Unanswered in the films. I didn't have to reply on extra material to tell me who the villains are.

Abrams should be asked why it wasn't explained in the opening crawl.
