Just put The Phantom Menace on, wanting to watch them all again before I see The Rise of Skywalker.

Saw this earlier today:

The original trilogy truly is a masterclass in creative ingenuity. :datass:

A pretty interesting video regarding The Last Jedi, which got recommended to me by YouTube.

Echoes a lot of my thoughts of the film and, like the creator, I actually walked out of the theatre intially a little bemused and disappointed, but it's become a much more interesting and complete film the more I think about it. This video actually does a good job convincing me of thematic and storytelling links between Episode 7 and 8 which makes the Sequels seem more satisfying now.

Still have a horrible, horrible feeling Rise of Skywalker is going to retcon a lot of stuff but the video at least makes me view the first two more cohesively.

It's not going to persuade TLJ haters, though at least it might make them appreciate the approach the film took. I think even if you dislike the film, you can't deny the thought that went into its efforts to go e characters development and story arcs, and how it tried to show new sides to things. It didn't just try to "subvert expectations" cheaply or go for illogical shocks - it's got a very logical, content thread right through it, even if some moments aren't perfect and some arcs aren't quite as compelling as others.

A new Star Wars trilogy without George Lucas? Surprisingly there was so much good will to the Disney trilogy before and after that movie - but The Last Jedi was released and it was so divisive, countless discussions have been had about the many reasons for that. Ultimately what was suspected has been confirmed, JJ Abrams had written a script for Episode VIII and this was scrapped and an entirely new script was written by Rian Johnson.

Angry Joe discusses what pay offs he would like to see for the first two films in this final movie:

I know there'll never be a Solo 2, but if there was, Craig T. Nelson as Han's dad in a flashback or a return to Corellia sequence would be so good.

Watched Last Jedi today, TFA last night, and the rest of the movies over the previous few weekends. The sequels hold up better than I expected, Abrams' fan service didn't come off as being as overt as it felt in the cinema, TLJ was fantastic, I cannot wait for Thursday night to come.

Spoiler free impressions from the first public RoS showing

twitter.com/spaceshipsporn/status/1206850701919436800

They range from "best of the new trilogy" to "fan-servicey nonsense" though most agree the pace is relentless and not all of it works.

Those of you on twitter, I'd mute #riseofskywalker as the spoilers'll be coming thick and fast from now on

That's... kind of amusing. The pace is relentless yet they had two and a half hours to tell the story? How long was the original cut? Five?

Do you think you'll go into this with an open mind or are you expecting to be disappointed?

I'll say my expectations are dampened and yeah, in a way I'm expecting to be disappointed. This makes it easier for the film really.

I don't want to know impressions either way, so I'll be muting Twitter and bailing out of here for now. Enjoy the film everyone :toot:

"relentless pacing" is not necessarily a bad thing but I just know what it means here is "too much happens without being earned" - considering I felt that way about Rogue One

Yeah, some seem to imply it's a good thing, a la Fury Road, and others that it never gives the viewer time to breathe.

We'll see.

At this point I don't expect it to be a "bad movie" in the strictest sense. I imagine it will be well made and relatively satisfying in isolation. I just expect it to ignore the interesting things that TLJ teed up and fail to provide a satisfying conclusion to either the sequel trilogy or the saga as a whole.

I'm likely to be watching it with my kids so will probably feed off their excitement and enthusiasm and most likely leave the cinema feeling pretty happy.
