Didn’t the director of TLJ basically spend the film strawberry floating with what Abrams wanted so why would Abrams’ then change his vision because some tit decided to make it about himself and not follow the story and vision as it was meant to be.

Abrams' vision was "more Death Stars."

Have to say I’m really excited for this Disney+ Star Wars stuff. I think this is where we’re going to see the best use of the license from Disney.

Abrams was never meant to direct the last of the trilogy, and likely never had a vision, as such, for the third film. He was only brought on because Colin Treverrow gooseberry fool the bed with The Book of Henry. He reportedly threw out most of what Treverrow had been working on, which included contributions from Johnson, and started over.

But yeah. "More Death Stars" is apparently his thing.

EDIT: Although yeah, Johnson's film was seemingly a direct rebuke to Abrams TFA. Abrams' films are all to do about legacy and family (it's his actual 'thing', which like most of his quirks he stole from Speilberg), about looking backwards rather than forwards. TLJ turned that on its head and explicitly chose themes that were new not only to the series but an anathema to Abrams' ideas, looking forwards not backwards with the themes of change and evolution. Abrams now looks to be dismissing all of this by bringing back not only the Death Star (for the fourth strawberry floating time) but also the Emperor for some unknown reason.

EDIT 2: The below \/ is interesting, but does reek of marketing speak a little

Not according to this Wired interview from 2015, in which Abrams also states the script for TLJ was finished at that stage;
Rian has asked for a couple of things here and there that he needs for his story. He is an incredibly accomplished filmmaker and an incredibly strong writer. So the story he told took what we were doing and went in the direction that he felt was best but that is very much in line with what we were thinking as well.

He was an executive producer on TLJ too.

To be fair the Empire only built 2 Death Stars so it could be that they just got really unlucky that they got destroyed.
Maybe a third Death Star will work :shifty: .
Perhaps they could make it out of Nintendium this time.

So what they're saying is that the story for TLJ was already there when Johnson came along asking for a couple of things for his vision, and it didn't in fact ruin anything Abrams did, because Abrams had already signed off on it? Or am I missing something?

I’m pretty sure I’ve read or heard in interviews before that there were no plot points planned out for any of these three movies and they were just made up as they went along

And that is far more believable if you look at the last two movies

I was responding to Errkal about Johnson messing up Abrams' vision for the sequel trilogy. The quote shows Abrams was fully aware of the plot points Johnson was exploring. He also seems supportive of Johnson's choices as they were "very much in line with what we were thinking as well".

Besides which, as BID0 says, I don't think there was a "vision" to mess up.

Agreed. They should have set out an overall arc, major plot, etc etc from the beginning.

I mean, of course I'm excited. The shot of the Imperial Star Destroyer fleet was enough to get my heart racing. But I am worried that this film is introducing an entirely new faction AND a new antagonist AND a bunch of stuff for Rey to go through and it's only got 2 hours to do it. It feels a lot like a setup to a new story rather than the end of an old one.

Maybe it is? Nobody ever said that RoS would be the end of the story, only of the Skywalker saga.

But it still has to abide by narrative rules: setup, exploration, closure. If by the end of this we have the Empire resurgent with a resurrected Emperor that's going to be an extremely unsatisfying end to the saga. Imagine if Endgame had had Thanos defeated only to have Galactus turn up just after Tony dies. It'd feel cheap as strawberry float.

Considering that George Lucas has been heavily involved in this film, I'm sure it'll have a solidly satisfying conclusion.

Not much footage from the new movie shown there but the double light sabre looks cool, impossible to judge at this stage though if Rey is on the dark side, I imagine it’s some bullshit vision.
