If you don't find Solo a disappointment then you're a disappointment.

@Taf

New Hope is boring and slow? I think that may have finally rendered me speechless?

You cite Rogue one but a huge part of Rogue one's appeal is because it leads up to the start of New hope and fleshes out a lot of its content. It's the first film - it needs to set up so much. I'm stunned by that description.

The ewoks are divisive I get that. But Jabba's palace section unnecessary? As opposed to the visit to the casino planet? With the wonderful creatures racing through it?

They went there to rescue Han. It's their obvious first intention leading on from ESB. It establishes and showcases Luke's confidence and new skills and sets up the rest of the film. If I didn't know better I'd guess your objections are because Leia is in a skimpy outfit.

Oh and you do know that Jenuall endorsing your view on films is not a good sign don't you? That man's taste is dogshit.

Solo was actually good.

And I agree with Denster. Jabba’s Place is important as Jabba is mentioned in Ep 4 for god’s sake, and Han was taken to Jabba in ep5 and you expect our heroes to leave him there for the whole of ep6? Madness.

ANH could have used more contemporary humour and slap stick comedy.

Opinions are opinions are opinions. All the first three are good in their own way but, minus the nostalgia factor, Empire is the only one of them that holds up as an almost flawless sci-fi classic to be placed alongside films like 2001 and Alien.

EDIT: And Solo was bad. Not prequel bad, but bad.

I need to see it again really as I was sort of half watching it but I think that says enough. The story is fine, but the characters are boring af and Emilia Clarke is way, way out of her depth with a character that changes personality every other scene (both the writer's fault for the poor portrayal and Clarke's for being wooden af and completely unbelievable as a distinct character). Also it does the thing where every single strawberry floating thing in the film needs to play into previously establish lore. It's incredibly tedious.

Yeah, a lot of the references to the original trilogy lore are really lame.

I watched Solo on a plane. It was fine.

Taf do you believe that TLJ is in the level of Alien and 2001 given that you think it's the equal of ESB?

I get liking the much needed injection originality that TLJ brings to the series but there are four or five scenes that are either outright bad or completely at odds tonally with the original trilogy that I cant fathom how someone could rate on par with the best of the bunch.

Emilia Clarke was rubbish, but the rest were better than I thought. Especially Lando.

And the twist at the end was something I wasn’t expecting!

That's my take. Loved Last Jedi but not to that degree.

My ranking had them as the same as I simply can't choose between them. ESB is so couched in nostalgia for me that viewing it completely objectively as a work of film is impossible. I rate TLJ so highly because for the first time since ESB it attempted to expand what Star Wars could be. Is it perfect? Heck no. Is it what the series needed? I think so. It's also a strawberry floating great film and the scenes people have issues with...I don't, or at least not at the level that's common out there. Apart from the usual contrivances*, there's nothing there that breaks the spell

Like, people are all up in TLJ's face about logical inconsistencies and gooseberry fool but we watched TFA last night and it's fucken full of the same thing. Why do they need to stop at Maz Kanata's when they could just take Rey and Finn to the rebel base immediately (handwaved as needing a "clean" ship but, guess strawberry floating what the Falcon goes to the Rebel base eventually regardless)? Whose map is that anyway? Who are the Resistance, and how are they linked to the Republic? The First Order of what? Starkiller Base's lasers travel the entire strawberry floating galaxy instantaneously and no-one comments. I mean, I could put "Starkiller strawberry floating Base" here and it would count as possibly the biggest inconsistency in the entire franchise.

*sigh*

Well, at the time we thought The Last Jedi would expand on the answers to a lot of those questions which it obviously didn’t do.

So TLJ was so bad it made TFA worse ;)

And yet I agree with all this as well.

This is what makes my blood boil about next months film.

See I have more issue with the forced comedy stuff that isn't present in any of the films with the exception of ATC and the awful CG stuff in the casino and BB8 ATST bit could be ripped straight out of that film. I think you're right that if you start breaking down the logic behind the story progression a lot of it probably boils down to "why did X do this then they could have...".

I find it hard too be objective about TFA and TLJ. I loved TFA and left the cinema buzzing, even looking back and acknowledging that the first scene with Han is a bit prequal CGI rubbish, some of the X-Wing flying is a bit odd and yet another pseudo Death Star scene that is somehow more boring than the scene in Episode One, I still attach my initial positive impression with how I feel about the film. Similarly with TLJ even though I've changed my objective opinion on certain things I find it hard to remove my initial feeling of disappointment.

I get that a load of people don't like TLJ but none of the quibbles I had with TFA were set up for a next film to explain them. Like, I like TFA but strawberry float it does an atrocious job of setting out the board. I only learned the difference between the Republic and the Resistance and where the First Order fit into the whole thing by doing extra reading. If anything TLJ simplifies things and makes everything easier to get to grips with.

EDIT: For the record I left the cinema after TFA absolutely strawberry floating beaming. I was incredibly jazzed and overwhelmed that Star Wars was strawberry floating back baby!

I haven't read the spoilers but it's the least excited I've been for a SW film since, strawberry float even before Revenge. I'm genuinely worried Abrams is just going to ignore everything in TLJ and reset the board again in a completely illogical way.

Ah strawberry float just watched all the Rise of Skywalker TV spots.

Again, I've not read the leaks but I know the original script for TFA had them returning to The Death Star to grab Vader's helmet as it had some shite intrinsic power to it. And there it is in the new TV spots, alongside the ruins of the Second Death Star. Abrams appears to be recycling a bunch of ideas that were cut from TFA then. Booooo. Also, I'm now completely convinced Palpatine is going to be CyberPalpatine.

EDIT: strawberry float, now I'm angry about Palpatine returning at all again. What a chickenshit, nostalgia-centric nonsense decision that was. Maybe

I read some article the other day where JJ seemed confused that some people found TFA to be too similar to the original and that he had relied to much on nostalgia - apparently that wasn't his intention at all...

I don't know if he simply isn't interested in doing something new, is afraid of it, or plain doesn't know how to, but the evidence of TFA and what we know of Rise so far seems to indicate that all JJ can or wants to do with these movies is entirely rooted in nostalgia and re-visiting things we have already seen.
