I'm strawberry floating freaked out how much we are in sync with our thinking right now.

It's strangely soothing as well though.
Hmmm.

Again, I've not read the leaks but I know the original script for TFA had them returning to The Death Star to grab Vader's helmet as it had some shite intrinsic power to it. And there it is in the new TV spots, alongside the ruins of the Second Death Star. Abrams appears to be recycling a bunch of ideas that were cut from TFA then. Booooo. Also, I'm now completely convinced Palpatine is going to be CyberPalpatine.

EDIT: strawberry float, now I'm angry about Palpatine returning at all again. What a chickenshit, nostalgia-centric nonsense decision that was. Maybe

I don't know if he simply isn't interested in doing something new, is afraid of it, or plain doesn't know how to, but the evidence of TFA and what we know of Rise so far seems to indicate that all JJ can or wants to do with these movies is entirely rooted in nostalgia and re-visiting things we have already seen.

And his Star Trek films (retro-future re-envisioning of the franchise)
And Super 8 (modern remake of ET)

Which is why George Lucas or Rian Johnson should have had full control over this trilogy. They at least know how to take the franchise to new places.

I think he's done the nostalgia thing pretty well in TWA and Star Trek, just look at all the rubbish sequels, remakes and reimaginings that fail.

I liked TFA. Thought it needed a safe pair of hands and nods to the original trilogy. As an intro to a new trilogy it didn't jar with me that it was pretty much a homage.
Like Taf I felt the risks Johnson took worked and left an interesting final act for us to enjoy and no doubt debate.

Instead we have safe hands JJ to lens flare us to a denouement with the additional insult of serious liberties taken with the original trilogy ending and arcs.
The end should have the Jedi as force ghosts strawberry floating face-palming.

Yeah I don't mind TFA and my feeling on first watching was one of real enjoyment. It has some weaknesses and flaws like any entry in the franchise but it had a pretty tough task following the prequels and largely achieved what it needed to do.

But for JJ to not acknowledge or realise just how heavily it shadowed the original and leant on nostalgia is worrying, and for him to seemingly be serving up an even more corny slice of franchise reheating in Rise just looks like undermining anything positive that both TFA and TLJ achieved.

I think we were all taken in by TFA. Star Wars was back! And it wasn't gooseberry fool! After the mess that were the prequels, it was just a relief that it was decent. Plus it hit the right nostalgia chords and the new characters were for the most part, likeable and pretty fun. Sequences like the Poe/Finn escape were great. But when you revisit it without that Star Wars hype you realise how flawed it is and just how heavily it relied on nostalgia. I still think it's decent but not quite as great as I thought it was when it came out.

I still can't understand how they are in this mess with directors. Looking back at my previous posts when TFA came out in 2015 I said:

I'm sure the trilogy story has been mapped out now. Rian Johnson may be writing it but he'll be following established story arcs.

So naive :slol:

Force Awakens for me still slightly edges ahead of A New Hope. On a rewatch, maybe those positions will change, since those two always seem to be the ones to change positions every few months. I definitely need to get them in a definitive position. I know the exact positions of every other film (except Solo which I still haven't seen) with certainty that they will never change.

I also don't think I had much hype for Force Awakens coming. Sure, it was the first new film for ten years, but I had plenty to occupy with the new novels coming - and even returning to the old ones. There was plenty for me to have got stuck into between the years that Force Awakens felt like just one more story to add to the collection.

Browsing sky earlier and Revenge of the Sith was on, so I put it on as I hold it in quite high regard.

It was at the mustaphar scene.

Oh my sweet Jesus it looked awful. It's amazing what your mind fills in after watching the Disney films, for while they're flawed in their own ways, at least they nail the look and feel of what you think star wars should be in your head.

It was just dreadful. The direction was non existent, scenes were just flat, with people staring at each other spouting nonsense. Everything looks fake as hell, the lightsaber effects look like they were done in Photoshop elements, the emperor looks nothing like the emperor in ROTJ. The NNOOOOoooo bit is as laughable as ever. Padme just deciding to die and the way it's said in dialogue had me burst out laughing.

Absolutely dreadful stuff.

I did the same thing but turned it off. Couldn't believe how bad the CG looked, it must have been rubbish for the actor's doing everything on green screen.

Yes the opera scene is great, and that probably becuase it has actual dialogue rather than just a back and forth cut which could be spliced anywhere in the edit.

Me and a friend were talking about little things in the story that could have made such a difference. Like to sell Anakin's slaughter of the Jedi temple, how good would it have been for him to go in to the council room, start wrecking stuff and then finally sit in a seat, the one has wanted but was refused, except everyone around him is dead.

Just realised when Disney+ is out here I'll finally be able to watch Clone Wars and Rebels. I'm sure either one or both were on Netflix at some point but I never bothered with them back then.

That's a fantastic idea. Agree with all the comments.

Still has some great moments.

Obi wan slicing and dicing him when he tries to vault over him as Obi wan did to Maul.
That was stunning.

"Don't try it."

Except it doesn't have nearly the same amount of impact when Anakin still had control of the loader droid and could have done just about anything else.
