I was super excited heading in and I still got shivers when the blue text appeared. Was I going in with a neutral mindset? No. But I didn't want to hate it.

But I do. And that's rubbish.

Too much or not enough contemporary humour, slap stick, pointless side plots or flying and surviving in the vacuum of space?

Only teasing. My gut feeling is that for me this will continue the downward trend after the excitement of TFA and I'll continue not understanding how people overlook the obviously bad parts of TLJ.

TLJ wasn't perfect, fo sho (and the Mary Poppins scene was indeed poorly done) but I like the messages it was sending and it's attempt to do something different and new.

Here, there are similar poorly executed scenes but the message behind them is "Hey guys, don't worry this is your Star Wars, just like you remember!" It's actively regressive.

Weirdly that gives me some optimism. Obviously we've all been in Star Wars mode again so you think about these things more than you perhaps should but TFA moved away from the prequels because it looked and felt how I imagined a modern Star Wars film should, TLJ starting with the mum joke, the slapstick and the Casino felt like a regression back to everything I hated about the prequels. Hopefully this being more like TFA means I will enjoy the initial viewing even if down the line I realise I've been nostalgia baited.

If this does really well then that basically confirms the fan base are only interested in a nostalgia trip, a franchise that will endlessly riff on the same beats, themes and ideas from now until the end of time.

If that's what the majority want then fine, I'm sure Disney will keep serving it up to you, but it's a damn shame and it will be something that I'll struggle to be interested in going forward.

Obviously I disagree with all that, but it's worth saying I think my biggest surprise was how much this film dumps on TFA as well as TLJ. It has no reverence for any of the previous films in this new trilogy, so desperate is it to be nostalgia fuel.

Also, and I didn't mention this earlier as it's relatively minor, but some of the special effects in this look straight garbage. If you moaned about Poppins Leia there are at least 2 scenes that make that sequence look like strawberry floating...Shaft.

Surely only Jar Jar Binks is capable of making things look like strawberry floating Shaft?

I watched the Last Jedi yesterday and I still don't see what's quite so dreadful about the casino section. It takes up a tiny fraction of the films runtime, and in a film that's all about failure doesn't it make sense for it to be a bit of a pointless excursion?

Worst thing about it is machine-gun-action-hero BB-8. It's no worse than the TELL THAT TO KANJIKLUB rathtar section from the Force Awakens

Cartoon CGI
Overall pointless to larger plot (other than getting loads of people killed again by Poe)
Heavy-handed messgae.
Looks very "earth like". Lazy and boring.
Plot is driven by stupidity. The only reason there's any tension of them being caught is they landed their ship on the beach in full view etc

Also the fact they are looking for a code breaker, mess up that because they can't park a ship, but just so happen to end up in prison with the world's best code breaker. What are the chances.

Wish my image sig would work

They're in a strawberry floating rush, they're not going to look for the premium bloody parking space!

CGI is better than the octopus monster from the cringe-fest that is the Kanjiklub section of TFA.

It's not pointless to the larger plot - it's integral to Finn's arc. :fp:

Oh and if you think that looks like Earth then I need to get out more!

See this is my biggest issue with TLJ. Everyone goes on about the plot, but I don't have too many issues with a lot of the major story beats, even if I don't feel like some character's decisions"fit" their personality.

But the writing truly is woeful. So much of the humour falls flat and is out of place, and the tonal shifts from scene to scene are jarring and serve to undermine the more serious parts of the film. It's ultimately why I consider it a badly made film. Or badly edited film I should say perhaps as I still think it looks amazing in parts (ignoring the dodgy casino sequence). The hyperdrive weapon moment is one of the best SW moments ever and I love the fight on Crait. All really well put together.

Either way though, I do think it's a shame RoTS has just completely ignored some of the directions TLJ took with its' story. It just puts another nail in the trilogy's coffin.

The problem with any of us trying to hold up the standard of humour in either film is that it is clearly so very subjective.

Do I think the mum joke is one of the worst lines across the entire saga? Yes. Is it feasible that Taf and the Knights of TLJ genuinely found it funny? Of course it is!

Now the situation has flipped on its head – I genuinely laughed out loud at least 3-4 times during RoS, whereas Taf found the jokes to almost entirely fall flat.

I would watch a Star Wars film called Taf and the Knights of TLJ.

D-O was funny. I liked the little robot mechanic.

I still think the prank phonecall joke was genuinely funny and was used well to establish character roles and dynamics that are paid off later on.

Horses for courses. My bone to pick this morning is people (Hexx. I mean Hexx) being gleefully dickish about everything.

Off to see Knives Out tomorrow. Nice pallette cleanser

Except they're not in a rush at any other point are they? They stop to waste plenty of time. It's just needed to advance plot.

Oh god I'd forgotten that entire bit

Ignoring the alien heads, it could be a high stakes casino in pretty much any "earth set movie" (you can completely see a Bond movie happening here)

I mean compare with this that...I mean what the strawberry float is this? Bubble Opera?..but at least it pretends to be otherworldly interesting

(Someone pointed out to me that Palpy is so evil in this he does the "talk slowly evil head turn over shoulder" 4 or 5 times in this one scene  )

I am too tightfisted to pay to see this and so downloaded a cam copy. The quality looks poor so I am not sure if I will bother watching it, but the translation on the opening crawl made me laugh.

Spoilers (maybe?) in box below. Although I have no idea if it actually describes any of the plot as it's mainly meaningless gibberish.
