You meant the moment that retroactively made every past Star Wars space battle make no sense, and that didn't even make sense in isolation (they had like three ships but waited until they had only the one left before hyperspace jumping it into the enemy... for reasons? They could have stopped the pursuit almost immediately with the same move and kept everyone safe on the other ships, rather than evacuating on tiny lifeboats)

Yep, that moment

Star Wars has tripped over itself so many times with continuity at this point, I'll take the fantastic cinematic moment instead.

I'm with you there, that definitely made the hairs on my neck stand up.

I agree with your previous point too in that despite initially being disappointed with Luke I like the overall story, that said I think just how interesting it is is massively overblown. Spaceship runs out of petrol and for reasons the bad guys can't shoot them down giving time to the buffoons to go on a trip to Intergalastic Vegas for everything to go tits up and set up the Battle of Hoth 2. It's interesting moment to moment but it falls apart under the suggest scrutiny.

I think I know what Hexx means about the casino, it's the sequels 50's diner from AoTC. Also the BB8 machine gun scene is worse than that bit from TFA. What the hell happened to the scale? BB8 must be a third of the size of an ATST head (cockpit?) by the end.

ROTJ wrapped everything up so they didn't need to continue on from it, but I get what you mean if that was always the intention.

He's said over the years had always planned it out in his head as three trilogies. Of course he never knew if he would get to make any of them other than the middle one.

How convenient that he started with a self contained story. The only thing that makes me believe that is that he didn't kill Vader.

You mean the original movie? Well yeah it's not a secret that there was no suggestion or guarantee that they'd get to make any more than that, so it's a mostly self contained story. That was continued into Empire and Jedi.

The 9 movie talk isn't new. It's been about for decades.

This sort of comment is really annoying. It's super dismissive and lazy.

I dislike the film but have given my reasons why over in the other thread, none of which are anything to do with being childishly set against it. I've actually spent the last 2 years being the Star Wars defender extolling positives whilst others have expressed negative views.

I'm allowed to not like this, just like you're allowed to like it.

I've spent the last 20 years being told that films I enjoy are garbage (yes, the prequels), so I'm a little bitter. :shifty:

Lucas wrote so much stuff in the 70s that he simply couldn't do it all in one film, or even one trilogy. Even in 1977 he was planning on doing the sequel trilogy shooting in 2011, when Mark Hamill would be the right age to play Old Hermit Luke.

Yeah Lucas's plans for the franchise were always as long as expansive as some of his original titles for the first movie:

"The Adventures of Luke Starkiller as taken from the Journal of the Whills, Saga I: The Star Wars"

Thanks George, I'm sure we'll fit all that on the poster!

Count me as someone who liked it. It had a great amount of character interaction that worked, some interesting set pieces, and gave an ending to the saga that - while not anything truly new or special - worked for the setup it was given.

Could it have done things differently? Absolutely, and I'd have wanted it. Some of the mirrors worked, others not so much. And while it acknowledged The Last Jedi as having happened, it did seem as though it was also trying to act as though it never existed. And my fear was sort of right in that it doesn't follow up with how the Resistance has grown from when we last saw them.

I saw it and have posted more in the spoiler thread, but I think it's worth seeing as it's still Star Wars and on par with the previous two films in the trilogy

I hated TLJ when I first watched it. Hated it even more on second viewing. Watched it with my son last night, bloody loved it. Not sure what's happened, maybe these films do need to be viewed through the eyes of a child.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have got into the original trilogy unless I saw them as a kid.

I would be so happy if I ended up loving TLJ. I've seen it three times — maybe I just need to give it a couple more viewings!

Try this video:

His series comes from the eyes of a proper fanboy, but some of the things he highlights does lead to a new sense of appreciation for what they were trying to do.

I can't remember The Last Jedi video per se, but I watched the ROTS one yesterday and it actually showed that Lucas did, to a certain degree, have a firm idea of what he was trying to do. I watched a few videos about ROTS actually, and it's gone up in my estimation.

I was disappointed with TLJ the first time I watched it, but watching some YouTube analysis of its themes and development helped me realise that there was a core idea between most of what the film did, and not just "subverting expectations" mindlessly or with no respect, like detractors think.

I watched the TFA one and, man, after ROS, that all makes me appreciate that film more now too (I really liked it until about 2/3 I realise where it was going, was disappointed about how much it was a backdoor reboot).

Hopefully he'll eventually do one about ROS too...

See that's what I find frustrating and probably what draws me back into these discussions; there is more to dislike about TLJ than simply hating it because of what they did to my precious Luke Skywalker. There are really good ideas that are beneficial to the series person but there are also some really, really bad things, the worst off which is as bad as anything in the series. I've grown to like it but I'll never put on a pedestal the way TLJers do.

I dont put TLJ on a pedestal either. The middle third drags quite badly, and while the core ideas behind Finn and Poe's development arc is strong, they could have executed it better - I would have changed up the codebreaker subplot and the slowest getaway chase everas plot devices.

But it's more defending the attack that all Rian Johnson cared about was tossing out everything the fans loved. Or that the whole script and plot was dictated by deliberately approaching things from the angle of doing the opposite of what the fans loved. To my eyes, there's clearly at least thought and reason behind the decisions made, even if I don't like every single decision made.

Just visiting my family Christmas, brother declares that "TLJ is gooseberry fool"

He's dead to me now.

The frustrating thing about disliking TLJ is people assuming my reasons for it. The argument always seems to be between "subversion good so film good" and "subversion bad so film bad" while I'm more of the opinion that "subversion good but film still bad" which neither side seem to acknowledge as being a possible opinion.

Honestly, I despised the film, thought it was the worst in the series, and whilst I don't think it's anywhere near the best now, I really enjoyed it this time around.

I have no idea why, the same stuff annoys me, like the Casino Planet, the whole Rose/Finn thing was just so badly done, Luke being Grumpy etc. But by the end they actually got Luke back to where he was, and Yoda's message to him was the thing that got him there as it always was.

I remember my brother hated the prequel trilogy, but being 10 years younger than him I absolutely loved it as a kid. Maybe it's just one of those things that is always going to be better through the eyes of a child. I have no other explanation as to why I am now a TLJ fan!

Watched the final movie this evening.

Objectively, Empire Strikes Back is the best of the saga.

In terms of personal preference (for the record I saw the prequels first):

(1) Revenge of the Sith/Rise of Skywalker
(3) Return of the Jedi
(4) Empire Strikes Back
(5) Attack of the Clones
(6) A New Hope
(7) The Force Awakens
(8) Phantom Menace
(9) there's only eight movies worth talking about in the Skywalker Saga
