Every morning I wake up and my first steps are really painful on my right foot, but no idea why. The achilles tendon seems really sore and tight so I guess there must be an issue with that, but I also have a continually sore heel (just the back of it, not the part that actually touches the floor), where if I press on it it feels like it's badly bruised, but there's no bruise there and I don't recall banging it. It's been like this for about 5 weeks now and doesn't seem like it's getting any better at all.

Sounds like this. I had it for a period when running end 2015/early 2016. Got some shoe inserts (and replaced my running shoes) and it's cleared up quite nicely. In the meantime, icing it and ibuprofen gel will help. Also, rolling a tin can under your foot arch can help.
