So I'm finally running the first mission of my cyberpunk RPG tonight!

Bit nervous, there's a lot of clocks and timers and moves and stuff to keep juggling as the GM, but fingers crossed! No doubt I'll add a summary when we're done.

Well that was a bit of a disaster...roll20 was acting up all evening, and just as we were getting going the whole thing crashed and froze one of the players out. Then the players couldn't hear each other, only me, then the virtual tabletop became unresponsive. We abandoned play after about an hour and a half which was super disappointing.

OH WELL.

Anyone gonna buy Vampire The Masquerade 5th Edition? We watched the World of Darkness documentary tonight and now my wife is Googling "Vampire LARPs in England". Not something I've ever done but I wouldn't say no to giving it a go.

Noooooooope. I follow a couple of former White Wolf devs/writers and there's been a huge controversy over the new Vampire. It's apparently incredibly misogynistic and transphobic and was developed in part by a guy who is known for bullying and harassing trans/queer RPG folks on twitter (as well as encouraging pile-ons from his army of followers.)

That would be enough for me, but it's apparently a terribly designed book too with unclear writing, vague rules and terrible artistic design.

EDIT: From reddit:

So is it safe to say that the 5th Edition of Vampire is going to be another reboot like Vampire the Requiem was?

Nope.

Do you believe Paradox Interactive will do a good job with the new series?

Nope.

For some reason #Paradox wants to continue with the original setting, yet doesn't seem to understand what made it so successful. And instead of leveraging the assets they paid for they've decided to reinvent the wheel. Finally there's how they handled criticism over pedophile vampires, use of the word '#Triggered', #HungerDice compelling characters to 'sexual assault', and the hiring of #ZakSmith, which does not bode well for how they'll handle any of the other controversial material they want to include.

So to say I have my doubts is an understatement.

Well I'm really enjoying what I'm reading so far. Admittedly I'm not far in to it but I'm not seeing any misogyny or transphobia. I just hope I can run a game one day.

I'm pretty far into Vampire 5e's rule book now and I do not understand the complaints one iota. It's everything I wanted and I can't wait to play it with people. The hunger system, in particular, really gets my juices going.

I've played D&D a lot with my friends but none of them know anything about Vampire or the World of Darkness so I'm planning to do a one shot (that might stretch into two parts) based on Vampire Bloodlines's opening missions. I.e. the goal will be for the players to destroy a Sabbat warehouse. They'll meet Mercurio, who'll have failed to obtain the explosives, which they'll have to retrieve before blowing up the warehouse. I plan on littering the scenario with hints about other things going on in the world, in the hopes that they like the game and say, "Hey! I really am intrigued by what was meant by x, y, z! Can we play more?" You know, things like the Elizabeth Dane being reported on the TV, Jeanette in the Asylum, the thin bloods on the beach and what not.

I've just been writing some location descriptions for it and I'm so, so excited.

I've never written a game from scratch before, hence why I'm just ripping off the video game beats. I've never been a Storyteller in a WoD game either so I'm just trying to make it as easy as possible for myself. I know the video game inside and out so it won't be difficult to make things up on the fly. The Storyteller screen and supplementary books can't come quick enough as far as I'm concerned. :msgreen:

I know this is from a while back but, due to White Wolf's continuously horrible content, Paradox (yes, the PC strategy game guys, they own WW) have stepped in and essentially shut them down:

Paradox Interactive have announced that they’re fully integrating tabletop RPG developers White Wolf after they used the suffering of Chechnya’s LGBTQ+ population as set-dressing “in a crude and disrespectful way” in Vampire: The Masquerade. White Wolf will receive new leadership and continue to “develop the guiding principles for its vision of the World of Darkness,” but will “no longer develop and publish these products internally.”

The rest of this post contains discussion of violent homophobia and transphobia, both real and fictional.

Paradox Interactive’s statement comes from its VP of business development, Shams Jorjani, who’s currently also acting as the interim manager at White Wolf. He states that the changes are part of “a process that has been ongoing since September,” and have “always been the intended goal for White Wolf as a company,” but the immediacy of their effect is clearly down to paragraphs included in the upcoming V5 Camarilla handbook that reference the persecution of LGBTQ+ people in the Russian republic of Chechnya.

Reports, including graphic testimonies, say that Chechnya has arrested and tortured hundreds of LGBTQ+ people, and killed at least three. Chechen officials, on the other hand, claim that these international media reports are false, because “you cannot arrest or repress people who just don’t exist in the republic.”

The Camarilla handbook, which has now been delayed by approximately three weeks so that these sections can be edited out, explained that Chechnya is run by vampires, and described the atrocities as “a clever media manipulation.” It reads: “While homosexuals are indeed held in detention facilities for days, and humiliated, starved, tortured, and eventually fed upon and killed, this is not the point. The point is to distract from the truth of what Chechnya has become.”

In other words, the real-world imprisonment, torture, and murder of LGBTQ+ people is presented as secondary to the political goals of fictional monsters, simultaneously downplaying the human tragedy and erasing much of its context.

Not before time IMO.

Crikey.

Anyway, AD&D was my world when I was a teen and then most of my young adulthood. The last time I played before closing the books was a twice a week, 3 month long Dragonlance adventure I DMd just before my first daughter was born in May 2006. My players said it was the best game of D&D they'd played and together they bought me a Dragonlance art book for my birthday in June of the same year to show their appreciation for one last adventure. As you might imagine I was rather chuffed and supremely grateful.

I do miss D&D, but I just can't fit it in and the old crew have all moved on what with families of their own and whatnot.

It's a hell of a timesink, and the hardest part of any game is getting people together. I've been lucky enough to find my first regular group over here, and even though everyone is childless (sounds depressing!) it's a pain to organise games.

Saying that, we played Monster of the Week last week and it went really well.

After a 13 year break I'm back into D&D.

No longer having the core rules from 2nd & 3rd edition I've picked up the 5th edition Starter and Essentials box sets and, (because I thought what the hell), Players Handbook*. Myself and a few eager friends have yet to play, but character rolling begins this weekend and once I've finished the garage conversion (one half is to be my art studio and table-top gaming area), we'll begin playing in a months time.

*I like that the Players Handbook is now all you really need with the DMs manual acting as more of a tool for expanding the rules and running one's own campaign. I will pick it up of course along with the Monster Manual because, well you know, it's always nice to have the set.

Anyway I've been flipping through the basic rules and it seems so much better, more focused with a lot of the guff left behind.

Can't wait to start playing.

I may be wrong but I don't think 5th edition has noneweapon proficiency's which seems like an awful shame as I felt they added flavour to a character.
It seems like an odd omission to me but it has been decades since I played the game so I could be wrong.

I'm still just getting my head around the new rules from the basic box sets so I'm not entirely sure. I do have the full Players Handbook, but at this stage I've only hugged it in excitement since it arrived in the post.

I have never played DnD and it makes me sad.

I was told ny my brother in law that his boyfriend will sort out some DnD with him as DM at some point, but he's in the middle of 2 campaigns I think.

I'm looking at GMing for the first time in almost 20 years. It'll be mostly to give my brother a break from running his D&D campaign. Any suggestions for games to run? I'd rather not do D&D. I had been looking at GURPS (my game of choice back in the day) but I'm aware the rules can seem daunting for new/casual players. I'm thinking maybe a sci-fi space opera game or a pseudo Japanese fantasy game.

Not sci-fi of Japanese themed, but I hear the revision of Warhammer Fantasy is supposedly pretty good.

Rolling up some characters this weekend. A Ranger, a Warlock and Druid, although I don't think the chap playing the Druid will be able to attend the first game even though we're not starting until October.

Getting people together is the hardest part, especially when you factor in work patterns etc.
