I don't know, I think it's a real possibility. The men's game is weak at the moment - Federer and Nadal aren't what they used to be but have been winning because no one else has stepped up. If Djokovic is back to his best, it would only take a couple of strong seasons for him to be very close to Federer. He seems to have found his desire and form again so I can see it happening.

Federer won the majority of his slams against also-rans, before Nadal became an all court threat. Novak has had to win all of his whilst Nadal and Federer have been around. I know you can only beat who is put in front of you but still.

If he does go on to match Federer's record, you'd have to level that same criticism at the latter part of Djokovic's career too.

Not that I think it's a valid criticism myself! :-)

It's not supposed to be a criticism or a detriment to Federer's record, just an observation.

Novak has unquestionably (along with Murray) had the absolute toughest of opponents to beat to get where he is.

Fair enough - I wrongly inferred criticism based on 'also-rans', my bad. There's no doubt Djokovic has had it tough, it's crazy to think that we've had the three greatest male players of all time in the same era. I liked what Djokovic said about Nadal and Federer:

"Maybe 10 years ago I would say I'm not so happy to be part of this era with Nadal and Federer. Actually today I am. I really am. The rivalries with these guys, the matches with Federer and Nadal, have shaped me into the player I am today. We have pushed each other to the limit every time we get to play each other."

Aussie Open starting in a few days.

Think Murray looks done. I can’t see him getting a set against PCB if I’m honest. He hasn’t looked great since coming back and that injury is probably the second worst to happen to a tennis player after wrist injury.

The top four have had injuries over the last few years. But Murray’s by far was the worst and he’d do well to challenge for grand slams now.

Hewitts career basically ended after hip surgery. My only thing with Murray is that I hope he starts to be a bit more aggressive with his forehand and serve. He needed to change his style of play in his 30s as he is not going to outlast the younger guys from the back of the court.

But at the moment he looks way off the pace. I just don’t see him sticking around like Hewitt did if he isn’t challenging for titles or being competitive. His doctor said this last month

And Dr O’Donnell said: “That wouldn’t be surprising because he has had problems with his hip for some time and it had reached the point where he couldn’t play. It wasn’t really at the stage where we could attempt to make his hip normal – it was just to make it as better as we could.

“He has certainly improved but he still has ongoing problems with it. It is not as bad as it was but it is not normal.”

Murray to retire after Wimbledon this year

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.mirr ... 840536.amp

Such a shame for it end this way :( but totally understandable decision all the same. Tennis won’t be the same without him to me

EDIT: Could even be after AO if his injuries stop him continuing

Andy, thanks for everything! I really enjoyed watching you play even during frustrating moments! Rest well!

Tennis been so boring without him. I’ve barely paid any attention to men tennis last year.

Dann shame, had hoped he could carry on and pick up more slams as Federer and Nadal retired but now he's retiring before them.

That's watching tennis, and enjoying it, over for me. Without Andy I have no interest.

Ps please rise above any of the nasty comments I've read on other sites about him.

Rapidly-greying is Mediocre to Average at games :fp:

Everyone tipped Nadal to retire first out the big four. I can see him being the last man standing.

Murray had been dealing with hip problems for 10 years apparently. I wonder if chasing the number 1 spot in 2016 was really the end for him because he was playing a lot of tournaments in quick succession. Not just playing them but winning all of them too. He never looked right physically after getting number 1.

Men’s tennis is going to be a hard watch in a few years. Whenever I do watch tennis it’s either a match featuring the big four or Del Potro.

Murray ruled out doubles. But I hope in a few years if he is pain free as apparently he struggles to put his socks on that he reconsiders playing doubles with his brother. He probably won’t considering his competitive nature and he probably won’t want to be apart of the tour constantly besides the odd commentary.

Good effort by Murray to make it look competitive in the first two sets. Looks like the third set Agut is going to run away with it as Murray looks more uncomfortable.
