That said, could he not just isolate now and get cleared to play? The tournament doesn't start until the 17th.
To be honest, I think it does qualify him for an exemption. You can’t get vaccinated within 28 days of having the disease so he has a solid ground to claim that he is *currently* medically exempt from receiving the vaccine.
The man’s a slippery banana split for being vocal about not getting vaccinated but silent about having caught the disease, but he should be allowed in to the country.

His lawyers are now also claiming he had a written confirmation from the Department of Home Affairs (Aus govt.) that he was exempt due to his positive case, not just confirmation from Tennis Australia.
If that's really true (it has to be black or white, either Aus govt. did write that to Novak or they didn't) then this looks like a huge clusterfuck for the Australian authorities, regardless of Novak's anti-vax views.

Well, I think he would have applied for medical exemption for the tournament whether he was actually exempt or not, but the thing I was driving at was whether he should currently be detained. An infection on the 16th places him squarely in a window where he can claim “what difference” while also being able to claim “I can’t get a vaccine even if I wanted to”.
Of course, that’s also extremely convenient the timing worked out like that, isn’t it? His “defense” here has either caught him dead to rights in a lie (he had the disease before then in a timing that doesn’t make him vaccine-exempt right now and he’s rightly detained) or with these events he was at it leaves him in hot water with another country’s authorities through his criminal negligence.
He either faked a PCR test - possible in my opinion because he applied for the exemption in November when he wasn't eligible in any way except for a recent COVID infection or he did a big indoors maskless event with kids at his tennis academy, then an indoor maskless photoshoot for l'equipe the next two days
Is it confirmed whether he attended that function on 17th Dec or is that just when he uploaded the pics? I thought I read something that he was waiting for test results, presumably he was probably having to test daily anyway so it's probably not that out of the ordinary that he wouldn't be isolating whilst waiting the results?
