Is it a real advert? . I can't imagine any timeline or situation where someone actually designed that ad and thought "yeah, this is pretty cool". Just astonishing.

I think they knew exactly what reaction it'd get.

Yup. Disgusting. Wish I didn't see it.

There was this awful but harmless advert from Gillette in 2019 [spoiler-ed below] whose modus operandi was (1) rile up the lunatic fringe of both sides of the toxic musicality discussion with a message that will piss some people off on a visceral level but can be justified with their advertising exec brains (2) generate a discussion (and therefore a bunch of free publicity) when the Piers Morgan types inevitably get hold of it (3) Justify it as an innocuous message and hope to vaguely gas light people whose value system isn't exactly aligned with the corporation (who themselves have cultivated a culture of male entitlement) into feeling like they're on a small level an advocate of rape culture.

The Gillette stuff is just obnoxious but it don't think it hurts anyone. That Sony advert however borders on evil! They're applying the same MO, but they're twisting a knife in a centuries old wound evoking slavery and white supremacy and other shameful gooseberry fool and if you don't like it you're whatever the 2000s (gooseberry fool this wasn't even that long ago) equivalent of whatever a "sNOw fLakE" was then.

I know what you're thinking: where's the duvet gone. And why doesn't the sheet fit the mattress properly. Bloody disgrace, it is!

What I'm thinking is: £50 for a new videogames machine! Inflation has hit hard.

Good spot, Balla!

£50 in 1996 equates to around £81 today... but that is still obviously so much cheaper than consoles are now. I guess that mobile phones have almost destroyed the portable gaming market. Even though most mobile games are atrocious money-grabbers.

I don't even remember that one. :slol: :fp:

I really do wonder what the marketing people of the day were smoking when they were coming up with this stuff.

From around 1995 to 2005, virtually anything was okay in advertising; it was an era of "laddish" behaviour becoming mainstream and the more outrageous the better. It's incredible how we're now in a period of - generally - far more conservative (little c) advertising where things are way more inclusive - just a relatively short time after that crazy/silly period. Quite a turnaround, really.

I must admit, things really did get crazy when the PS1 came out, before that there were dodgy ads sure, but i don't remember them being quite so widespread.

I missed the "book mistreatment alert" line, the second line is very sinister without it

OT, but this shows how far graphics have come: the above image failed to load and I could only see the very top part (just the bit above the letters, so some red hair and some colourful braiding). Until I refreshed I was really confused as to why someone had put a Horizon advert in the retro ad thread

A couple from Electronic Arts for Burnout Revenge, along with a pre-order wall calendar/poster following the same principle, and one for Need for Speed Pro Street, in which I guess they just said 'enough pissing around with implied nudity...'

I don't think current Nintendo would ever make an advert like the original Smash Bros one again,
