I perused the earlier pages of this thread and enjoyed all the lewd adverts from the late 90s. I did upload a bunch of forgotten SEGA adverts from Viz magazine to a retro site called Racketboy about a decade ago, but I'll add them here too (as they are similarly outlandish). These are in line with the humour of Viz, but still surprising to see SEGA attacking that adult audience so aggressively. Enjoy!

I love this thread. It's the contrast in these old ads of what was perfectly acceptable then, playing into the emerging lads/young adult market with its edgy humour, and then how now that is just not okay whether it be for taste, seediness, misogyny or anti-gay sentiment.

That Streetfighter 2 one! :fp:

The ad is simulating fighting-game banter. The meaning is that Bison is less masculine for being 'a puff'. And Blanka's line is a backward follow-up insult that possibly plays into the growing conversation/awareness amongst young people that being gay isn't a negative.

Is that what 27 year olds looked like in the 80s?

I'd forgotten just how bad much of the games (and other) advertising was in the late 90s and early 2000s. Looking back at it now, it's pretty embarrassing; but sometimes kinda funny in a "I can't believe they printed stuff like that" way. I guess that so much media was wrapped up in the "lads mags" type of thinking. It's odd as the rise of "girl power" seemed to co-exist at the same time; I can see that maybe the "lads" stuff may have been a factor in women wanting to push back against the abusive tone of this advertising and editorial.
