They sure did like their page 3 models for game advertising back in the 80s. Corinne Russell this time.

Were all British magazine marketing campaigns run by 13 year olds in the 90s?

I remember the nipples in this box art/advert actually caused some controversy so they redrew it.

Looking at these advertisments, I suddenly recalled an incident of a gaming company that wanted to advertise on gravestones. Actual, real gravestones.

Was I imagining this? A quick bit of digging confirmed that no, I wasn't. Enter Acclaim Entertainment!

Image

The Guardian, back in 2002, wrote:A computer games firm has been accused of pushing back the frontiers of bad taste after it announced that it was seeking to advertise its latest title on gravestones.

Acclaim Entertainment said yesterday that it would pay relatives of the recently bereaved in return for placing small billboards on headstones, and that the offer might "particularly interest poorer families".

A London spokesman for Acclaim Entertainment, which is based in New York, said that whilst it was appreciated that people may find its advertising offer offensive but that others might see it as a good way of procuring "a subsidy to burial costs to give their loved one a good send-off".

Meanwhile, Eurogamer wrote: "The concept of what we're calling 'Deadvertising' is entirely consistent with the theme of the ShadowMan 2econd Coming game and provides us with a permanent presence for our advertising. Content and context are two important principles of marketing ShadowMan," Acclaim Communications Manager Shaun White commented

Incredible  .

I can't remember anything specific off the top of my head, but that definitely wasn't the only wacky baccy led advertising/PR campaign from Acclaim.

I doubt they ever planned to actually do that. Free publicity in those papers by announcing they would though.

At least, I hope not...

Your scepticism is well-founded, Tomous...

The Guardian, back in 2002, wrote:No one has yet to volunteer and the firm said payments would be calculated with regard to the exposure potential of any particular headstone.

I wonder how they would calculate a gravestone's exposure to potential consumers? I'm sure it would have been done with an appropriate level of decorum!

To be fair make it an add for a game series I like and give the cash to my daughter and it wouldn't bother me

Didn't Sega leave dismembered body parts around London at some stage?

I'll give the starfighter 3000 one credit for being terrible to the point of being good.

Some of these really are dreadful, i remember that Worms one, even now i find it toe curling.

I also remember when Sony did marketing mail for the PS1 game Medieval, they sent it in a brown envelope and made it look like an official hospital test results letter. One arrived at my place addressed to my brother at the time and mum was completely freaking out over it. Sony really did do some dumb things around that time.

Hey Dave, we need an advert for the new V rally game.

Erm, what about some bird bent over and then something about taking her up the dirt track?

Great! But it's a magazine read by children.

Oh right, well make sure she's got her tits out too then.
