you go from

"hi yes Susan Ill pull up the quarterlies"

to

"your daughter calls me daddy too - in 2077"

Listen, I've gotta be professional on video conference calls, instead of having an RGB aura :slol:

Another one I've heard of, but have no idea what it is.

What's wrong with emails and Skype?

If this had happened in January I don't know how my office would have coped. It was only in February that they gave us all laptops with the idea that some of us could work from home sometimes.

Slack is like IRC (or discord), channels work a lot better for discoverability and searchability than group skype text chats, and emails are awful for real time communication.

Buh?

Isn't discord a thing that everyone with a Patreon has set up? Never used it.

Emails are handy for anything where we need to be able to trace it back, and for general, non immediate queries, as I work out of a shared inbox. Skype for anything urgent, but people tend to target the same people for queries that way, so we often direct them to the generic inbox so the lazier/less reliable team members still have to pick up some of the work.

Teams is very good for easy shared file use and storage. That is the main thing to me that lessens the impact of working outside the main office in actually doing work.

The loneliness on the other hand. :(

Yeah that's the one. Discord and Slack are very similar (i.e. they're both IRC but proprietary and with a modern UI) just with different target markets - slack is for Business and discord is for Gamers. Discord was more VoIP (so proprietary Mumble) and that's still what it portrays itself as a lot of the time, but all those patreon "$1 discord access!" you see are most of the time just private text chat.

y'all mummy strawberry floaters need to appreciate scale as well

shared inboxes or the odd irc or whatever could work for a small or whatever company - or you could be supporting an infrastructure of tens of thousands across sites all over the world innit

thats why these companies all sell different platforms dudes

My team at work manage importing over 80k TEU (20ft equivalent units) into the UK per year using basically just excel spreadsheets and a shared inbox. :dread:

This is the global supply chain we're relying on to see us through both this and Brexit.

We used to have a "study/office" room in the house up until a few years ago where I had my desktop PC setup with a nice dual monitor configuration, combined with my work laptop as a third display it was a pretty nice space to work in. But that has long gone now so if I ever do get sent home to work I basically just have to sit at the kitchen table or on the sofa with my laptop.

It is not an ideal situation!

Should have placed it in the basket.
