I just found out that the guy who played Frank Sobotka is only 13 years older than the guy who played Ziggy.

I felt hollow when it ended, too. I properly caned all five series within a couple of months and really regretted not taking my time a bit more.

However, that was almost two years ago and I can barely remember what happened, beyond the landmark events.

Give it time, rinks, and you'll be able to go back to it with a fair amount of freshness and, as I'm hoping will happen, it'll be even better the second time around.

Cool. Was watching last might and naively assumed it was normal length, so I stopped watching 45 minutes in to save a bit... In that case though I have another 45 mins to go.

There are so many issues they need to/can address, I really have no idea where it's going to go.

I spent the last three weeks watching this for the first time and I finished it last night. I enjoyed watching seasons 1 and 2 but when I got to season 3 I was hooked beyond belief. The storyline had developed so much that I was often watching multiple episodes in single sittings just to find out what happened next. Some key moments include (major spoiler alert; I'd advise against opening this if you have yet to watch the final episode):

Stringer getting killed :shock: Omar and the New Yorker made their move so suddenly it was a real shock to see Stringer's man fall. I didn't actually expect them to get Stringer when I saw the two of them a few moment prior to this scene watching Stinger go into the construction site; when they had Stringer cornered I was still shocked when they blasted him. The white guy Stringer was meeting as he cowered from Omar :lol:

As shocking as it was to see Stringer fall, my mouth was left wide open when the little kid put a bullet through Omar's head at the back end of season 5. As Omar made his raid on Marlo's corner prior to his death I thought that he would eventually hunt Marlo down, leaving McNullty and Freamon to take care of Chris, Snoop and the others.

While those two deaths were shocking, seeing Bodie meet his fate left me with a heavy heart. Even in season 1 he was my favourite of all of the drug dealers; seeing him move from a runner to a Lieutenant emphasised his character and I hoped to see more of him as he would work with the police to take down Marlo. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way but it was fitting to see him fall defending his corner, especially after his outburst against Marlo as he saw the police excavation at the vacants.

Another sad moment came when Sherrod took the tainted vial intended for Bubbles' bully. While I had a feeling that this tragic mix-up would happen once Bubble's left the vial in his jacket, it was still sad to see it happen. Seeing him try to hang himself in the interrogation room really added sincerity to what had happened and showed you how terrible Bubbles truly felt. I'm glad that Bubbles managed to shape up and dine with his sister and niece in the final montage.

It's a shame that Duquan became the new Bubbles instead of going to High School but this is what make The Wire so great: the stories are all wrapped up, but not necessarily in a 'happy ending' kind of way.

Keeping with the schools, I was glad to see Namond go on to win a debating competition under the parental guidance of Colvin and his wife.

Quick edit: My favourite Homicide detective is without a doubt Freamon; seeing his work with the wiretaps was amazing. The way that he was calm for most of the show in everything he did, and even kept up his side hobby of creating doll house minitures, added to the interest in his character.

As far as season go, I have to say that 2 was the weakest while my favourite is tied between 3 and 4; I loved seeing Hamsterdam unfold, but the work in the schools really showed another side to the drug trade. Honourable mention to the opening scene in season 5: 'The bigger the lie, the more they believe.' :lol:

I finished this the night after my post above, in late September. I still feel a bit sad that it's all over.

I can't bring myself to watch another TV series as I only want to watch the very best as otherwise they'll only be a disappointment compared to The Wire.

I don't understand the dislike for season 2. Season 5 is easily the weakest as far as I'm concerned. Season 2 and its focus on the docks was a little disjarring after the first, but I thought it ended up as one of the best seasons. In 13 episodes it got me from absolutely despising Ziggy to loving him.

Edit: Not to say season 5 is bad at all. It's great TV. Just not up to the absurdly high standards of the first 4 seasons.

Just started season 5, and I have to say my favourites so far have been 4 and 2 as well, although I can't remember s1 all that well. As an overall package it's absolutely incredible though, deserves every bit of praise it's gotten.

Also, I was wondering, what is everyone's favourite opening credits? Again 4 and 2 are the best for me, I was actually genuinely disappointed with season 5s though. :lol:

My favorite were S1 and S3. S2 was great after re-watching but at first It bored me senseless. Now I need to finish Season 5 even though I already know most spoilers :fp:

Yeah I can see my order changing upon a re-watch. Although I think one of the things that is generally agreed is that season 5 is the weakest. Were there any behind the scenes reasons for 5 being weaker than the rest?

Just finished episode 7. This season is great so far. Stringer is a real piece of work.

I wasn't a fan of series 2 at all. Too many dislikable characters, particularly Ziggy and his dad.
