This is Not Allowed. You must be miserable to do better work.

Are you not motivated by fear? This is unacceptable.

So we're understaffed, don't have nearly enough first line engineers and work have decided what the best idea would be is to re-hire one of our older first line engineers who now lives 8 hours behind us and won't start work until 4:30 our time. Just what we need, someone who isn't going to help out with the normal workload at all. I can't even begin to explain how stupid this feels to me.

I hope you enjoy having to stay on past your hours to give him a catch up call!

Used to get it with our U.S. office in San Diego, they'd start at 5pm our time and put calls in, then just be sat there with breakfast making time wasting small talk because it was the start of their day. I've got an hour's drive, strawberry float off!

I'd be following up with relevant managers if you can, smacks of classic HR getting involved for the sake of it.

I've emailed the hireing manager, as he was the one who told me to apply

I mean, I am not being arrogant here, I would be a perfect fit for the job:

Working with 3 UK service providers, of which I worked for one (in the very team I'd be interfacing with!) and I live within 30mins from the 3 UK head offices.

Nuts.

Stop getting ideas about going too high above your station. You're a mindless drone and you'll be happy being a mindless drone. Only the people we approve can get the better work, you have to slave away and be happy about it.

Surely that's the point of going for new roles, to go up a grade? Or is this another classic business tautology where you have to already be doing the job you want to but nobody will train you up to do it?

Ah but Trelleron, I can't go up 2 whole grades, just one at a time.

Its a joke is what it is.

Kez, you should ask HR if they are expecting people to come down a grade for the role.

Here is another thing I find annoying, the company I work for seems to have a habit of wanting you to come up with other work for yourself.

For instance, apparently 60% of my job is delivering technical training and the other 20% - 40% is meant to be 'adhoc' work. Where am I meant to find that, what am I meant to do? shouldn't management be directing this?

Is that not good in that you can skive a little when you want?

oh yeah I mean on a 'busy' week I only do 3 days of actual work. But it is so tedious. Literally the exact same content day after day.

The thing that pisses me off about what managers call ad hoc work is how you're supposed to miraculously guess which of those things are a priority and when they need to be delivered and oh actually that was much more important than your usual daily tasks, couldn't you tell?

When all your emails look like this

Dear you

Please handle the below task.

Regards,

Person.

What task? Why does it need to be done? When does it need to be done? If I'm not already experienced or trained in doing that thing, how do I inform myself of the method? What happens if this isn't done or can't be done in the proposed time frame (which is usually made up nonsense)? Is there a contingency plan for that? Who's overseeing this task? Who do I go to if I need more resources or there are problems?

gooseberry fool managers, and any task issuer for that matter, are so strawberry floating lazy

"please do x" is not management. Do your strawberry floating job properly you daft banana split. Software could do a better job than you, so why are you paid 3 to 5x to sit at a desk and type out demands, then complain when the task isn't properly understood and undergone?

In my past experience of even the smaller organisations (and I've worked for several) you'd be lucky if you even receive a list of work you need to compete within any given week, never mind daily. "ad hoc" work is fine if someone is actually managing expectations and deliverables for those tasks.

So now I just presume everything is my problem and my responsibility. At least then I know where I stand.
