Got a LinkedIn message yesterday that...well, at first I couldn't believe it wasn't a scam. It was a request for an "exploratory conversation" about a full-time writer job at one of the most exciting game development studios in the industry. Proper if-I-had-to-name-my-top-5-dream-gamedev-jobs type stuff.

Did some googling, it seemed legit and now I have a Meet meeting on Monday with the studio recruiter.

Even getting the nudge honestly made me feel like a million dollars so I am both bricking it and super excited about the call. I'm going in with the knowledge that the chances of anything happening are slim, and the attitude that even getting this far, unprompted, is already a career highlight.

Man.

You gonna get vetted mate. ;) good luck!

They probably just want more detail about your background.

I've had my first request for a shop sign front and window in years, which at least when I started this business are supposed to be the big impressive projects that obviously stick around generally however long the business does.

Also, the shop front is 4 strawberry floating metres long so it would have to be paneled up.

But I have covid, work alone, and in a short amount of time, there's the potential I have to pack everything up.

strawberry float this virus man. And land "Lords".

Absolutely it's this. I was thinking through the process and I imagine it'll be

First convo: experience, personality, "Willing to move?" light questions on interests and writing influences
If passed: Invitation to apply, incl. writing test
If passed: Second phone interview with the relevant team
If passed: Second writing test
If passed: In-person interview
If passed: Offer

That's at a minimum I reckon.

And this strawberry floating sucks man. I hope you're not being affected too badly by the virus and that the job pans out.

THANK YOU.

Even if I don't get past the first stage, I already feel like I've won something. Senpai-noticed me!

I once lost my mind when a development director at EA came across my LinkedIn profile around the same I applied as a Cinematic Artist (I was simultaneously invited to send over my showreel to a recruiter representing the same position).

Turns it was literally someone in here following my own drama and shenanigans who worked at EA.

At the same time I was getting chucked job leads for 35k plus in marketing and such just because I was about to graduate with a good degree and a lot of self initiated stuff on my cv comparatively (I also put a lot of effort into ticking so many boxes on that design). A year later I was absolutely hammered for this 25k or so position as a Web designer. Why I settled at 16k I still question but at least it was a position I could crash in without any kind of disability support instead of by that point having comfortable /lavish lifestyle and having to lose it. So it still used to the same sort of income which I guess is more realistic.

Who knows if I'll ever start my search again but I'm quite happy dealing with individual clients honestly while continously building my portfolio. I still remember the excitement of getting job leads when you're looking though. I guess I get the same thing now only it feels far more human as its just someone who needs something typically a business owner with the same problems as any other, and so there's no dread about being crunched through endless hurdles just to beg for a salary.

Always feels great when the new starter to your team who only joined today knows another member of the team is leaving before you do. New guy is congratulating this other person on their promotion and I'm thinking "What are you talking about?".

The one positive is I assumed he was joining to eventually take over from me because he was interviewed and hired without my knowledge.

I'm always last to find out when colleagues are leaving...It's grand though cos I don't really pal around with many in here.

I did actually speak to her this morning though. "Oh hey I've been promoted and I'm transferring to Australia" feels like something you'd naturally bring up.

Just had to rebuild my work computer as it had got strawberry floated up and so everything is now back at the default corporate settings :dread:

For some reason they seem to think that everyone in the company must be blind as the whole UI scaling on the OS is set to like 300% magnification by default! It's like the modern equivalent of one of those phones with ginormous buttons on!

Maybe you're the only person without a 4k monitor and this is how you find out.
