They also seem to have really small (or selective) memories.

Qikz have you considered looking at moving from 1st Line support to 2nd Line support? (Or even 3rd Line if you've got some Server experience).
That way you're not actually on the front line taking calls, plus the work is a bit more challenging/rewarding.

That's not how it works in our company.

They've been promising to make me 2nd line for the last 4 years and keep coming up with excuses not to do it so I, along with my other friend who seems stuck in the same gooseberry fool I am are Senior 1st Line Engineers, we not only get 2nd line tickets to work on we also get first line tickets and escalations as well. We're essentially the dogs bodies of the company and that's what we get for staying when every other strawberry floater left when it was bad. They expect us to do everything and the trouble is looking around I get a better salary here than I can pretty much anywhere else I've seen so either I take a salary hit I can't afford to find somewhere else or I stick with it and hope the ridiculous middle management strawberry float off being twats.

In our company everyone has to answer the phones by the way. The phones are not the problem.

Or thought about network support? - The place I work at is hiring but they require (for now) Bilingual English & French speaker, but given you know Japanese it might still be worth applying as we have global teams.

What's the salary like/what's the hours like/where is it?

Basically I'm 1st line support when it suits them to moan and 2nd line at every other moment, not that they call me that here but I do all the same gooseberry fool.

The office is in central London but I am sure our support engineers are WFH, decent* London salary, and amazing career progression.

I don't actually know but I am basing it of the salary of our San Francisco engineers - but I can find out :shifty:

Edit: Just looking and there is a role listed for Tokyo ?? It might not be immediately open to you, but I know lots of people who have been able relocate and the company being really supportive.

If you're interested in possibly moving to Security our Osterley office are currently advertising for a Security Specialist and from looking at the job requirements it doesn't necessarily say you need a Security background,

    What you'll bring:

  • A Linux or Windows engineer with 5+ years of experience of working in a large environment with multiple security domains; preferably in an Infrastructure DevOps/SRE role.
  • Passionate about automation and reducing unnecessarily repetitive work
  • Curious about what is over the next hill and willing to have a look.
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.

If you're interested hit me up with an e-mail address and I can send over a referral.

If you can hit me up with a link if the engineers are WFH for certain so I can research into this a bit more. Part of my issue moving to work in London is having the issue of needing to pay for trains which is super expensive and offsets any amount of salary change unless it's a huge one, but if it's WFH this works in my favour.

This seems like a pain in the ass place for me to get to since I can't drive/the trains would take forever, but I'll keep it in mind. Thanks!

Sadly the second part doesn't hold up:

reducing unnecessarily repetitive work

It must be what, 4 or 5 times now that Skynet have sent a Terminator back in time to try and do the same bloody job!

Exactly, they sent a machine back, leaving the humans to get on with dying in a nuclear wasteland.

Good point, and not bad for a guy whose only other big success is vacuum cleaners!

Right now remote working is the way to go for the company (I haven't been to the office since March), and the company are quite flexible on location. We currently have a person on one of my teams who is working for the Scotland office but lives in and works from Northern Ireland. They just shipped his laptop over to him by courier.

In terms of getting to the office there are free shuttle buses for staff from these tube stations if any of them are easier to get to,

Clearly a nice recruitment bonus in effect at your places of work then ;)

It sounds like getting out of your current place would be a beneficial move Qikz, either that or the management having a complete overhaul and finding a way to stop being dicks!

No worries, hope you can get something better sorted. I know how shitty 1st line can be, but at the same time it can be a great first start. 10 years ago I was doing 1st line service desk and now I'm doing fancy gooseberry fool with Windows Server, SCCM, Powershell, vRealise Administrator and vRealise Orchestrator.

Yesterday I had to request data from an engineering team in respect of some new regulatory reporting metrics. To sum up what they did, over 10 or so emails, was repeatedly say "let us know which applications you require updates for".

Which would be fine if I had ever had sight or knowledge of the applications they are working on, which I told them, but presumably they have a report or a tracker of work they are undertaking. So instead of giving me a copy their data, they expect me to magically know all the application references and site addresses where we have ongoing schemes.

Now I have to chair a meeting today, where I get to tell them, in a polite and politically correct way "stop strawberry floating around and start being team players".

And of course the deadline for submission is today. :simper:
