What field are you currently working in if you don't mind me asking?

For me when I see my peers and managers above me I just don't feel like I would truly enjoy doing what they do. I don't feel that I have the same passion as they do towards their careers. Also I feel stupid sometimes...like I fear saying something in a meeting at work in case I sound stupid and when I do say something a lot of the times its something obvious lol or something no one has the answer to because they didn't consider it either possibly because it was a pointless question.

Deep down I feel that I want to go back to university to study ... I don't even want to say what it is as I don't for sure if its what I truly want as I have been thinking about it for years on and off. If I truly wanted to then I would have probably just gone for it years ago but it keeps picking at me...plus its extremely competitive and time very time consuming. But there are just too many factors in life now like I have to pay a mortgage, my age, starting over again etc etc.

Think I need to read some self help books...hope they'll make me feel better.

Since leaving school I've always worked in accounts departments across various industries (although they've all felt pretty much the same as one another) and my feelings echo everything you're also feeling.

A couple of years back I completed three years of accounting diplomas in the hope it would progress me enough to earn a very comfortable wage but I now feel like I wasted my time and the thousands of pounds it cost me to attend classes, study and attain the qualification.

And now, I don't think I'd even want to do the jobs I was hoping to gain access to with the new credentials. Too much responsibility and pressure to please the higher ups. Not to mention, I've already forgotten most of the theory I learned in class. I do feel lucky to have a job at the moment that's fairly easy and moderately stress free so maybe the problem is me? I don't want to put the extra effort in anymore to propel myself forward as it feels like the added stress and disappointment is far less healthy for me than if I sit still.

I think I just hate work like most people and feel particularly sorry for myself at the moment. :simper:

How about setting up your own accountancy business? Or make the moves to get in line for a Financial Director position?

I honestly don't think I could take the pressure of running my own business and I'm not confident enough to succeed in an interview for a role that high. I did apply for a lot of management accountant roles after completing all the exams but no one was interested.

Sorry, I don't mean to poo poo your advice. I think I'm just spewing my thoughts in a therapeutic kind of way. I've dealt with a lot personally in the past year or two that's left me a bit deflated and jaded. Just a part of growing old, maybe?

No worries bro, I get it. Work is for suckers. That's why I've found it best to get work to work for you in whatever way possible.

Just walk in there acting like you already have the job. If you do it with enough confidence then people should just go a long with it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with not going for higher jobs, I certainly couldn't deal with the pressure of being a manager and I have learned to accept my strengths and weaknesses for what they are.

I for one am someone who puts pressure on themselves and definitely have imposter syndrome, we're all wired differently and I'm now just trying to make me be the best at what I can do.

Currently annoyed with our office in general.

1) A lot of people are blaring away electric heaters under their desk. Now it's an old building and often cold, but they're wearing light cloths/blouses etc and then complaining they need a heater blaring away to stay warm. Dress sensible. Not saying 3 layers and a coat, but at least a warm top.

2) It's stuffy as strawberry float. No windows open and little circulates due to closed doors. Can we open the window briefly for a few minutes to get air in? NOOOOOOO they'd get too cold.

I wear four layers to keep warm at work and I still wish I could keep my coat on.

Why dont you go freelance? Set up a facebook page, and get advertising. Even if you just aim for a bit of extra cash. One or two jobs per month doing people's accounts?

I used to build and manage the computers for a small company and I still ended up bringing in my own laptop

And I still use it. In the end, you realise you'd rather use what you know and can anticipate than anything else, even if it's slower.

I wear 3 layers to work. 2 in the office is acceptable. Wish I could keep my hat on sometimes to be honest, but the big boss of my place hates it, so I gotta make do.

to work-haters - i had a similar decision to make as i was very unhappy in my past job.
work will never be 'fun' and what you want to all the time but it can and should be rewarding/feel like you have value.
before i became a teacher i tried to think about what part of my previous job and parts of my life felt good to do for me, and decided that teaching was the best fit.
im sure this wont work for everyone but i think that mindset switch from 'work should be fun' to 'work needs to be rewarding' really helped me decide and 1.5 years in im glad i changed careers

This is happening to me right now - a realisation that I'm either not suited to or won't be happy with the sole career path currently laid out in front of me, particularly after being knocked back for a promotion a few months ago. I've sort of fallen into this as a career rather than choosing it, and I've spent a few years trying to convince myself it's something I have a passion for when it probably isn't that true - likely to avoid trying to find something I'm truly passionate about for fear it can't be shoehorned into a traditional career.

I don't think I could hack teaching as a career though, I had a friend have a breakdown over the stress it caused him.

When I worked at Mad Catz, it was strawberry floating amazing. I can't tell you how much I loved that job. One day i had to sit and play Forza 5 all day testing our new wheel that was in development at the time. The packaging stuff I did was so varied and interesting, in a subject I was passionate about. Amazing stuff.

Now I'm bored out of my skull with no way back in to the gaming industry and it's genuinly depressing. I know I'll never enjoy a job like that again :(

I think this is partly why some people move around every few years or so, so they're never stuck in one position for too long and don't become trapped in a career path that they're ambivalent to at best.

Maybe if they didn't employ people to sit and play Forza all day they would have stayed in business. ;)

You can change positions but surely it's much more difficult to actually change the career path? Unless you're willing to start at the bottom again or your new career happens to suit the skills/experience you developed in your old line of work.

Depends how you define career path.

Example, somebody moves from a mid-level analytical post in procurement to a managerial post in the engineering department whilst staying in the same company (let’s say a pharmaceutical conglomerate for the sake of this topic).

Do you class that as a career change? The individual’s role has changed completely in terms of responsibility and scope but they’ve stayed put in terms of employer.
