Can’t you just get Oblomov to do it for you? He seems to love the idea of warning/sacking people for the crime of being sick.

strawberry float off, it's a horrible thing to do. It's necessary when the person has attended work for around two months of an entire year, been through two occupational health referrals, received extensive, significant support paid for by the company, had working patterns changed to their favour, had work allocations adapted to their favour and still fails to come into work for more than 1-2 days in a row.

Or maybe I should continue to forever blow the limited money I have on paying this person for being off work all the time and leaving the rest of the team to pick up the slack, causing serious stress and impacting the quality of service?

Some of the bosses here went out for a “networking” meeting last night. One of them has emailed to say he is “working from home today” and two of them have text somebody here to say that they are coming in later and making up their hours as they are hungover and being sick. Only one of people that went has actually made it in this morning.

These are the same bosses that like to hand out written warnings if staff reach 3 sickness absences in a year.

I couldn't be dealing with that kind of gooseberry fool, I would probably end up getting fired as I would have to confront people who behaved like that!

Update: the two who were “coming in later” are now “working from home”. Well one of them is, I can clearly see from the systems that the other one hasn’t logged on since yesterday.

If it was piling up work on me or if they were dragging me away for written warnings, then I would be saying something. But my work doesn’t need any input from them and so I can’t be arsed making a fuss on behalf of people that can’t be arsed making a fuss.

What are peoples thoughts on jobs with fixed lengths, like 2 years? I'm not finding much to apply for in general, and would really prefer the security of a permanent contract as I would like to try and own a place to live in the next few years, but worried I'm being too picky by not considering limited length contracts. I'm also concerned that I've been looking for a new job for months now with no luck and don't know what I would do if I couldn't find anything when the time ends.

I've had limited run contracts turn into full time positions. One time, my boss even referred me to a different employer as they really didn't have any additional funding for me, but they wanted to help me out.

It really depends on the situation, it's a risk but could end up going well for you if you make a very good impression.

I've been a temp and offered extensions. It's just how some organisations hire.

If it's an actual contractor position (like you'd have to create your own limited company and all the rest of it) then the two-year thing is a requirement to get around the IR35 regulations (where if you contract at a company in the same position for two years you're probably an employee not a contractor) and they'll change something minimally to get around it for another two years.

Where's the law on that? I thought the government considered you an employee regardless of how long you worked somewhere, if they are literally your only work.

Hi all, I have a v techie 16 year old son who will be kicking his heels when GCSEs finish in 2 weeks and looking for a bit of summer work. He lives on the internet and taught himself to program years ago, writes and sells cheats for computer games etc. Just done GCSE computing and is predicted level 9 (new one above A*) so is a v keen safe pair of hands. He has experience working on windows using c++, php and client server applications. Can also be persuaded to make tea and runs errands. Please pass on if you hear of anyone snowed under over next few months. Thanks

We got sent home yesterday as a water main burst nearby. Weirdly, I'm hoping we are open today. I'm off next week and I have work that needs to be done.

Sad.
