And yeah this is a good protection mechanism - unless you're specifically required to don't list your current employer as a reference.

Obviously this may be hard if you have only had one job so far!

Don't references usually only get called up once someone has actually accepted a job or even started?

That should be the case, yeah. At least so far, I haven't been asked for references by anyone.

Interesting, my experience (and therefore assumption about the general process) was that referees are contacted before someone is made an offer. After all there is no point in finding out something negative about a potential employee after you have already made them an offer!

This would be poor form by the recruiting company because you're alerting somene's employer they are interviewing for other jobs before they have agreed to work for you. Most companies have a policy of only confirming employment when contacted for references anyway.

Like I say this has always been the way it happens in my experience (and anecdotally what I've heard from others) so my assumption was that this was standard.

Some quick googling seems to suggest that this is the case as well, with reference checks happening when they have whittled the pool of potentials down to a few candidates but definitely before they have made an offer

Previous employers maybe but I've never known it to be the case for current employers.

Thanks again, everyone!

I must remember to backup my Cookie Clicker save though and transfer it to my home computer.

Feeling absolutely exhausted now.

Current work just rang. It wasn't the hilarious result we were all hoping for but the FD sounded so dejected and depressed. Sounds likely they'll pay me for my unused leave rather than let me use it as holiday but he didn't argue any of my other points. He just sounded utterly miserable.

Sounds like he'll want to discuss things in a few days but I imagine that'll be handover stuff rather than anything dramatic.

I do fully expect they'll argue that I need to be in the office but we'll deal with that when it happens.

That was my take on it.

Anyway, I've received their "official" email of acknowledgement from HR and they haven't questioned anything so I got exactly what I wanted.

Don't strawberry float with The Zilnad.

My work tried to say that WFH was a privelage and if people keep ignoring the phones we'll all be back in the office soon regardless of if we are or are not vaccinated which is insanity. Us being in the office doesn't make people less likely to ignore the phone, from personal experience it makes it more likely.

Ball is in your court now. They can't be a dick to you because they need you to hand stuff over.

I suppose legally there's no basis for it but in my view flexible working is a right not a privilege. Managers get pissy about being ripped off and "time theft" even if there's no difference in performance or even if performance improves. Say for example their people aren't constantly being phoned for no reason which is arguably time theft anyway as the level of service some clients expect is far beyond what their contract offers.

Just keep doing your job, they're being bellends.

Oh and I also delighted with Zilnad's story :D

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Thank you, thank you.

Just submitted my references so fingers crossed it all goes through. No reason it shouldn't.
