Last time I had an emergency was when my heating system packed in last winter. Boss was dead on about it, as he experienced something similar just before that.

Depends if you have a normal boss or a boss who should never have been promoted because they completely abuse any power they’re given.

I have to admit our place is really good about stuff like that. I've been allowed to work from home just because I was getting a new TV delivered before.

They do ask for as much notice as possible for general leave, which is only fair, but there's one guy on our team who almost always puts it in last second (like asking for a week off the day before) which gets a few rolled eyes but always gets approved, though sometimes a passive aggressive email goes out to the team DL a few weeks later reminding 'everyone' to give as much notice as possible.

We don’t have a set policy, it’s decide by business areas and team leads how they want to handle it.

I can go “can I have this afternoon off” and it would be cool, pretty sure I could skype my manager on the day and he would be cool.

If something urgent comes up or you have an appointment you can usually come in late, but nobody outside of four other people seem to be allowed to work from home and it makes 0 strawberry floating sense.

my work is pretty chill, just asked if I cold take a half day yesterday to look at flats and my boss was cool with it.

Helps that I am usually the first in the office. But that is circumstance rather than being a showoff.

I received a reply from HR on my query on notice for holidays. It's pretty wishy washy and uncommittal but it does confirm that there is nothing in any of our contracts or in the staff handbook about what notice is required.

So the "contractual 2 weeks notice for holiday" that was mentioned in the email is utter bollocks.

I am looking forward to the fight the next time I give just 1 weeks notice for a half day off.

Despite having a 75 mile commute to the office each way I'd hate to work from home full time. The lack of any kind of social interaction during the day would start getting to me.

I do work from home 2 days a week though.

Oh same, I only tend to work from home twice a month. The full-time home workers are generally new mums who want to save on childcare costs

So I was off ill on Friday and I'm still not feeling better. I shouldn't feel bad about not going in tomorrow as well, but just the act of having to wake up on the morning and call in every time makes me feel so guilty about doing it. I mean if I feel like this tomorrow it's not like I'll be able to do any work properly anyway, so why does it always make me feel so awkward?

So I was off ill on Friday and I'm still not feeling better. I shouldn't feel bad about not going in tomorrow as well, but just the act of having to wake up on the morning and call in every time makes me feel so guilty about doing it. I mean if I feel like this tomorrow it's not like I'll be able to do any work properly anyway, so why does it always make me feel so awkward?

I feel like this as well. I only work two days as I look after my son as well and I came down with a stomach bug last Monday. I work in a hospital, so you have to have 48 hours clear of symptoms before you go back to work, so as I normally work Tuesday and Wednesday that meant I missed my whole week. I felt better on the Tuesday though so it was basically annual leave.

Fortunately my boss is cool about these things, but I still felt awful for not being in, even though I was genuinely too ill to work. I felt doubly bad as before I'd spoken to my boss on the Monday he texted me to say he'd shifted the timetable because my other colleague who does the same job was ill with a chest infection. It was essentially like trying to put out a football team and all your players in one position are injured.
