Long story short, it's been a year since I was told I was getting a pay rise which didn't happen due to lockdown. Now we're due to get a contract, where my 'time' has been quoted (albeit at part time hours) but at more than 3x my rate.

How would you guys approach this?

I work as a consultant.

I get paid well, but my hourly rate is ridiculous. It's around 8x my pay.

When I worked in practice the general rule was 1/3rd employee costs, 1/3rd overheads and 1/3rd profit. Never did the maths, but considering we didn't recover from the clients at 100% and we had time where we'd do non-client work. (And then what you put into employee costs is debatable, i.e. share of rent etc).

I think the ratio from charge out rate to my hourly pay based on annual salary/260 days x 7 was between 8-10:1

I'm guessing someone just put a synonym for "spicy" and didn't realise that it's a sensible swap in all contexts!

I just finished 3 years additional vat accounting and found out that if I merely decided not to (optionally) backdate that far I would be owed twice as much as I would have to pay HRMC, had I done that.

What a colossal waste of time that was. I had my "original" return ready some 3 or 4 weeks ago before I got the "do it now" letter from Her Majesty's so all I get now is a black mark :x

And we we just talking about managing your own affairs. OK, you don't need to voluntarily collect VAT (although you probably do need to if you or your company earn over £100,000 a year, which I strawberry floating don't ) but this has got to be one of the most boring things I've ever done in my life. Although I tried to make it somewhat more enjoyable by kind of gamifying the idea, the harder I work on it the more money I'll be able to claw back.

In the process however I found out I never claimed some £2-3k worth of equipment / annual investment allowances due to them not showing up on my profit/loss, because they count as fixed assets and aren't shown there. If I suddenly earn silly money in the future I won't get the tax relief I'm eligible for, so, that sucks. I have to write and ask to amend at least 4 or 5 tax returns :fp:

If anyone cares (which is nobody), you can however amend a self assessment tax return up to a year after you filed it, which I will be doing. Gotta look out for my future self and all that. At the very least if I end up just losing loads of money on my business I will kind of get it back in the form of tax relief. Quite possibly the one and only perk if you DO do your accounts properly having run a business, well, not very well  (although not all of these things are the particular fault of an individual - coronavirus for example).

I see VAT and HMRC and instinctively recoil

Work our asking me twenty questions now because I haven't bothered answering the phone this week. I'm just playing dumb but with only for days to go, they must realise I don't care and that it's pointless to even make an issue out of it. It doesn't ring very often so a couple of missed calls barely registers with me.

Really wish I didn't have to bother with next week. My productivity is going to be next to nothing

I'm almost done today. At least I should end up with a refund. And yeah, Zilnad, it's not like I owe any tax whatsoever as this is an elective tax, and I hope they pay attention to the big tax dodgers out there, but I still hope HMRC do not query this. I mean, it's strawberry floating pointless, I haven't owed tax in years, why would I under-report the tax I owe on a voluntarily tax scheme? (I guess you could do that to claim more VAT back than you can, but still, we're talking virtually pennies here in real terms versus whole scheme running into the billions).

Leaving my current job on June 18th, just handed in my notice. It's been a mental and brilliant 8-9 months but the relentless away work has taken its toll, especially over lockdown, and the dig is winding down a bit. Contracts run to the end of July but I'm going to get out a bit early, go on a nice volunteer dig to relax, then have a little holiday and see what I can get into for the two months before the PhD starts. The way the overtime works out I've essentially worked an extra two months over the last 8 so got enough money to carry me over if I don't end up doing paid work.

This is probably the first time I've handed in my notice with mixed feelings rather than unadulterated joy, it's been fantastic. But it's not fair on my partner to be away from home any longer.

Good luck, Red. Sounds like you're making the best decision for yourself and I hope things work out fine. I'm sure they will and I'm glad you've had this unique experience. It certainly sounded interesting when you've spoken of it previously.

So in next level bullshit because the two people stupid enough to agree to go to London are off one week in July they're trying to tell me I've got to go to London that week and I'm now anxious about how I get out of it.

I emailed my boss yesterday about WFH full time and explained how I would be happy to go to London, but not full time and only once I'm fully vaccinated; that won't be until August.

I don't see any reason why we even have to go there. Government guidelines could change by then and I'm wondering if I ignore it for now and then talk to them closer to the time or try and get out of it now. Issue is there's nobody else they'll send because I'm the only person who knows that client, but the last time they forced me into London I was really ill with anxiety and I don't want to go through that again. I realise I still need to find a new job and get out, but anyone have any clever ideas on how I avoid this and somehow not get into trouble?

For a whole week? That'll be really obvious given they know I really don't want to go in.

I did think about going to a doctor and getting signed off for anxiety or something.

Jokes aside, if you were ill with anxiety last time you probably should go speak to your GP anyway (if you hadn't already)
