What if we gave communism another shot, guys? Maybe this time it'll work?

We’ve tried a feudal system and it was gooseberry fool.

We’ve tried communism and it was gooseberry fool.

We’ve tried fascism and it was gooseberry fool.

We’ve tried capitalism and it was gooseberry fool.

We need a new system, anarchy?

Nah mate, it's anarchy now. I am just going to take your Labyrinth DVD and steal a cheese and pickle sandwich for myself.

I’m finding that too TNAG. Having to apply for stuff I’m not even really qualified for through tenuous links wherever I can find it. Good luck mate!

Nah but there was a documentary about folk pissing in jugs in their work vans cuz they don’t have time to jump to an actual toilet. Hard pass for me thanks. And nursing isn’t easy on my bladder already.

That sounds mental. However, I know DPD pay very well and their systems seem inherently better so I would go with them if I were a driver. No idea really.

About the stress in small business, I can relate to that (well, aside from now running my own). When you have just a couple of employees just one or two directors are basically doing all the top down organisation and they are as a result probably a bit gooseberry fool at it or not really doing any organisation at all. On the other hand, I've worked in a conglomerate, and there was so much work coming down the tube in such a painfully ordained way it was just as bad if not worse.

Ultimately, the only way for me is to control the tap myself, and focus on aspects other than speed, in my case, utmost quality. I don't normally have to worry about speed at all because that is not the performance indicator a company will almost universally demand. If there's one thing I can promise is that It Will Be Good and by making that my focus I attract customers that don't normally care that much about getting it tomorrow all the time, forever.

Haha. My last job was working from a van, and regularly had to do that. Tried a number two once....not an ideal scenario haha!

I’m sure there are better ways to make a living.

One every 4 minutes seems unattainable giventhe driving between houses, stairs and entry to flats and such and signingnfor parcels. No to mention finding and unloading potentially heavy items. Which makes me think you’ll end up working late to finish delivering, and probably not get paid for it given that you’re assigned a task that ‘should be’ completed within the time frame. Though I could be just really sceptical about amazon and their practices.

However, they say you need to deliver around 100-140 parcels per day. Seems like a lot, its roughly 1 every 4 minutes. Anyone any experience of working for them, or similar operations?

Having worked on the vans for UPS as a helper over the Christmas period, I'd say the ease of delivery targets really depends on the area you're given, but I suppose that's obvious.

For example, when I worked a run in Manchester city centre, 130 drops was about the standard over peak period. But because everything in the city is so densely packed, you're never driving more than a minute or two at a time, and you can manage about 20-22 drops an hour between two people. Compare that to a suburb like Urmston, where the average day was about 100 drops. It's a lot more driving between points, so you'll only manage about 16-18 drops an hour. Either way, you still have to be pretty meticulous with your route planning to make sure you're working efficiently.

Like Bunni said, though, I have my doubts about Amazon's business practices. All the horror stories about their warehouses doesn't exactly instill confidence in their delivery service.

What are people's opinions on working from home? I have seen a job being advertised where I can do my current job from home for another organisation.

My current place is really stressful and management keep ramping up business without thinking about the cost, I love the job just not the way we are being treated and expected to do more and more in the same time.

The benefit is 7k pay rise (same job as now)
Mobile phone, dual monitors provided and laptop

I will lose every day people interaction
Save money on petrol and time

Increase energy costs

I'm one of the most skilled people in the office and senior in terms of experience.

We have already lost 3 people to other firms in the last month who were really good at there job as my workplace is not recognising how good there most highly skilled staff are and if they keep going there will be a real talent drain

Sorry for the ramble, strstful day

Apart from the social interaction it's all pluses. Energy costs should be pennies more a day over the year.

In my opinion there is quite a lot you need to consider:

Social interaction
Inadequate written documentation and instruction from work
Difficulty asking questions or seeking advice
Increased demands and expectation for proactivity without understanding your current workload
Isolation
Lack of motivational environment
Lack of "sense of place" / workplace separation
No clear "clocking in and out"
Working when you are ill
Reduced mobility/exercise
Possibility of mild depression

You really need to set up a good working environment, and I would strongly consider co-working or working from a library or someplace at least one day a week and making sure you exercise and maintain a social life.

Sauce: part time remote for for 2 out of 3 days, self-employed for 4+ years

Cheers for the comments.

Although leaving would be good, I do feel on this one the risks would outweigh the positives and I would be best sticking where I am for now. Like I said I enjoy my job just not the unrealistic expectations we are placed under.

I would say working from home even if that is adjoined with higher salary is good it is just a lot more difficult than most people anticipate. It's not "the dream", it is harder.

(It's easier for me but I have a disability that makes office work difficult.)

I'm going to hold off for sure, there's always the chance they will recruit more people in the future plus I know two people who are joining so an observe approach may work well here.
