Overly-flirtatious Portuguese girl was on form again today. The hot weather lately has brought out some stonking outfits. It was like that Mexican weather girl was in the office.

Also, anyone struggle with the balance of deciding how senior to get (or aim for)? Obviously we all want more money generally, but my aim so far has been to get as high up the ladder without the hassle of managing people, spending all my time in meetings or dealing with the bullshit that senior management usually does. It's like carefully weaving a path that allows for maximum earnings with minimum hassle. Difficult line to tread.

I truly hate my job, I wanted to quit about a year ago but got talked into staying, I then spent since November trying to find a new role, but couldn't really find anything I wanted. I've recently become a bit less picky both in salary and role, but handed in my notice a few weeks ago without another job lined up.

I still have 10 weeks and 1 day left of my notice though, and just find each day painful. I must spend about 30 minutes away from my desk each day just thinking how much I hate it, which is probably incredibly reinforcing.

I think you need to be careful with your career. I think most people want to become a manager or beyond but the seniority comes at a cost. I've been a senior manager for the best part of a decade and although I enjoyed being a team manager and still having my hand in on the technical side, as I've become more senior I'm pretty much totally hands-off and miss all the technical stuff. Because I've been away from it for quite a while, it is pretty much impossible to get back into it unless I want to give up a lot of my personal time to use for training, which I can't and won't do because at the end of a long day, doing some training is not on my mind.

I have a number of people who are very technical that want to be managers and they need to be very careful in what they wish for.

General question for people: how did you find your current job? I need some inspiration. Was it through a friend that already worked there? Something like monster or Reed? If so, did you know what you were exactly looking for? Did you go with a recruitment agency?

I found mine by looking on the companies website, they are a fairly large local company so new they would probably have something at some point so keep looking.

I also (semi) hate my job and am thinking about quitting and taking a break. The things that put me off doing this is the prospect of not finding a job by the time my planned break ends and also how this will appear to future employers. Do people here think a 3-6 month gap in employment because I wanted a break will look bad or create suspicion?

If you are reapplying to the same sector yes because if you needed a break once you may again. If another sector it may look odd but you can probably spin it in your favour, took time out to skill up on the new sector etc.

I don’t think it looks too bad, most companies these days offer career breaks to employees. Or you could tell a small lie and just say you went travelling for a few months, most people understand the desire to explore the world.

I've just started a new job after having a bit of a break for.. about 14 months(?) You definitely need to have a decent excuse when it comes to interviews to explain where you've been. The job I've just started is with a company I worked at a couple of years ago so the fact they already knew me worked in my favour, I think.

I would really like to do a computing course, but my local college doesn't do anything beyond extremely basic stuff, and I seen what the OU did to my sister and that makes me wonder if I could hack it for a few years. Even at that, the OU course I think has a placement period, I'm not sure how I would work through that.
