LinkedIn is a horrible platform full of Barry Homeowners lording up about always giving 110% in their personal and business lives.

I only use it when I'm looking for a new job. And tbf it has always served me well in that regard.

Here is a comedy song by Bob Mortimer about linkedin profiles:

The feed is strawberry floating awful that's for sure and does seem to be 90% upper management and recruiters bitching about each other and awful management/self improvement maxims / office memes (also again mostly from recruiters), but as a CV/experience hoarding "touchpoint"* it's pretty comprehensive whilst uniform for everyone. And there's plenty of options for crazy "portfolio" careers like mine i.e. I'm just making gooseberry fool up as I go along focusing vaguely on one particular "sphere" of work.

And you definitely don't want to "add" the vast majority of people you work with to Facebook. Actually, since deleting my FB profile, I'm sort of glad LinkedIn exists.

I didn't know job application forms were requesting profits though. That's kind of discriminatory against anyone who doesn't want to participate in any of this gooseberry fool, which is certainly their choice.

*actual employability industry term

*You should definitely use the words highlighted by inverted commas in your LinkedIn profile for maximum success

Been asked if I would be interested in moving development teams at work.

I have experience in .NET from my time in IT Ops and they are setting up a new team to work on some .NET based systems that dont get much love and there are only a few of us with .NET history so we have all been asked if we would like to move away from Java based stuff to that team, some are very experienced some less so but they want to give us the chance to improve skills etc. rather than hire new as we all have an interest so we have all been given Pluralsight access to up skill ahead of the new year when we are likely to be moving to the new team if we want.

Very nice to have the option and stuff and not go "oh that would have been nice" as they get fully qualified .NET devs in sort of thing :D

Finally heard back about my promotion at work, I was unsuccessful sadly but I'm not too upset about it as the whole thing was a bit of a punt. Got a mix of useful and gooseberry fool feedback so it wasn't a complete waste of time!

I'm in the office today and they seem to have changed the staff network so I can no longer access GRcade on my laptop. Booo!

Wearing formal shirt and trousers for the first time in six months is a bit of an eye opener...

I've got serious lockdown belly hanging over the top of my trousers.

Just had a blissful week of annual leave but already I'm feeling sick in my stomach for Monday. Still WFH currently and I'll continue fighting for it to continue but I'd really prefer not to have to have that fight. I just wish I could turn off the anxiety over it all but it starts weighing on my mind any moment I'm not occupied with something.

The worst bit on LinkedIn is people sharing stories that have been shared before and saying it’s their experience for comments/reach and it’s bullshit

Only legitimate use is plain old my business is doing this or that gooseberry fool, most of the time, just in different styles snd formats.

I had a guy who had no experience appear at my offices every day for a month asking for a job.

I took a chance and now he is the managing director and Jesus.

Always believe in people, qualifications and experience aren't everything

Pen input, or just simple touch? To go on your desk?

Simple touch, To go on the desk hooked up to a laptop. Toyed with the idea of getting an all in one, but eh.

I've gained weight as well, the good thing is for me, most people say I look a lot better with it.

Go for PCAP, not IR, where possible.

But really most will be fine for simple input, most sites have a section for touchscreens. Don't go for an AIO, no need to force yourself to upgrade when it's computer becomes outdated.

If you want a portable monitor (since you're using it with a laptop) ars Technica did a recent run down of equipment they like, and a portable touchscreen monitor was one of them.

First day of a three week holiday, logged into my work laptop to sort out my company shares for the year and all hell has broken loose. Going to have to spend most of the day dealing with a follow up issue that is absolutely not my fault, and I am absolutely furious.

My promotion at work is officially official, Im heading up the new R&D team in the company. Change in career path and a mountain of new repsonsibility but super exciting at the same time so Im really looking forward to it. Have a weird 3 months ahead where I hand off my old duties and slowly get stuck into my new ones but its all great. :D
