Do work have the right to ask for the nature of an appointment? I've told them I'll be out of office for an hour or so tomorrow morning for an "appointment" but I offered to use annual leave if needed. They've asked what it's for and obviously I want to give them as little information as possible. I feel like I probably do need to say whether it's doctor/dentist/interview/etc but, if it was doctor (for example) I wouldn't have to tell them I had a torn arse as that's my personal business.

I'm assuming I'll just have to make some bollocks up and say dentist but I'd rather not even do that if I don't have to.

I've always said doctor's appointment when I've had an interview. It's not like they can ask any follow up questions. Well your place might ( ) but easy to shut down with "none of your business, sorry".

Another technique for finding detail oriented people on freelancing sites is include some random phrase in the listing or whatever and ask to include that. If someone doesn't, they haven't read the job description and just clicked "apply".

Yup that's why many of these things are profoundly unrealistic which is why I'd rather just tender enquiry, pitch, do thing, 1000x over than do.. Well exactly that but going through ridiculous hoops each and every time and then each and every day after that.

Sometimes random questions can be useful to get an idea for someone's ability to think on their feet and come up with a vaguely logical/sensible solution to what may seem on the surface like a ridiculous situation. But they really do need to be used carefully!

I'd quit my job and start a social media account for the Elephant and use the money I make to look after it, ethically of course, no elephant rides!
