61 days?!

I'd still be running out of them within a month.

61 days plus bank holidays.

I can literally take a full month off and have 2 months worth of time off left

Even with changes to holiday years etc. how the strawberry float has that happened? Have you carried forward loads of leave?

Our holiday year normally goes July - June, but from next year it changes to January - December.
This year I started with 307.5 hours due to carrying over 37.5 from last year.
Next year my new allowance would be 277.5 hours.
At the moment I still have 181.5 hours outstanding.

So in January they'll be giving me my 277.5 new hours, plus my outstanding 181.5 hours, meaning I'll have 459 hours of leave.
Divide that by 7.5 and I'll have 61.2 days worth of leave.

I think they might have given me too much when I started, as there was a lot of confusion when I first started over holiday allowance due to the weird shift patterns I worked. They ended up issuing me three different contracts before getting it 'right', but that allowance is an explicit term in my contract now, and it's also contractual that it increases by 7.5 hours every year for 5 years.

I’ve decided to take a days annual leave each week in December so I can work less but still take the same wages home.

I get 20 days holiday a year (not including BH) and even that is difficult to take because they're arses about letting me take time off. :(

I am in a bit of a predicament. I recently started permanent role in my current work after being agency for five years. Is it acceptable to still keep apply for other roles now? I mean, the trust has been underpaying everyone for years and they strawberry float everyone around with temporary contracts for years so I feel absolutely no loyalty to the hospital. I have discovered that my new roles is also just as overburdened and underresourced as my last one, with the added joy of not being familiair with anything.

I think I could probably get away with putting my new and last role down as a single entry in my CV as I was still working at the same place all those years.

There's no such thing as loyalty in the workplace. They'd dump you in a heartbeat if it suited them, so don't feel it isn't acceptable to apply elsewhere.

Yeah, I felt some loyalty to my old team, but since I am not working with them anymore I don't feel any reason to stick around. I guess I kind of got comfortable there. I kind of regret accepting the permanent role as being around people I liked in the old office was one of the mitigating factors.

My main concern was producing a really short entry in my CV, but as mentioned I can probably pass it off as the same role as the job titles are identical and the employer is the same.

One good thing about this situation is that it has given me a kick in the ass to make more of an effort to find something better.

I don't think it's a big issue having a short duration employment on there, as you've left for your own reasons. However, I'd probably tell a white lie and remove it. If they find, they find out, who cares?

Don't do that as a referencing service would find out you are lying.

Work says they're giving me another pay rise in Jan, which comes to about an extra 4 grand or so a year. Still not as much as I asked for previously, it's much better than nothing, and there's no strawberry floating negotiating with these damn people. They have a brilliant tactic recently of not letting you be part of the discussion; my manager mentions something vague about about trying to get me more money when the time is right then a few weeks later it's been through my manager and the MD and I only find out about it after the fact. This raise combined with the new staff we're getting in the new year are a positive step, but things are always very, very slow, and never quite as much as you ask for (I still say we need more people than we're getting, but we're lucky to be getting these their wages are so low).

Clarkman very kindly helped me with my CV but the main issue still is finding jobs to actually apply for. I've got a fair few job alerts set up, and bookedmarked job pages of places in the area that could be worthwhile looking at, but I'm still only finding a couple of jobs a month most to apply for. I think I might look to do a Prince2 in my spare time; the more time passes and the more responsibility I get the more relevant it seems this would be if I wanted to move to something similar run by people who knew what they were doing. I've considered looking further afield, but at the moment moving away from my Mum just isn't a possibility and probably wouldn't be until summer at the earliest.

It's annoying having a problem that I don't know the solution to.

Has anyone here worked IT service desk before? I was looking for an inroad into IT to gain experience and have seen a trainee service desk position. However, it pays about a grand less than I currently make and I do not deal with stressful situations well. Is it worth applying to this? I'm not sure how useful it is in furthering a career. Currently I have HND in systems and development and cannot get any jobs related whatsoever as I have no experience so I was thinking it might be worth thinking about. Money is not really much of an issue as it's near enough that I'd probably make back that amount in fuel savings. It's just I don't want to end up working in what is basically a high stress situation.

Depends where you go but it can be proper stressful, but then so can most of it.

Contracting may be a way to go to get experience.

Yeah what's your goal here?

I'd say service desk is not the best entry point to IT in the wider sense unless what you are interested in is a role in that kind of area. Most people in our place who start in those roles can get "trapped" in service & support roles when they really wanted to be working toward things like original application design and development.

Thanks for the device, I really don't want to be stuck in call centre. I think I will just keep at my part-time degree course and then aim for a graduate program. I am mainly interested in development rather than support. In the mean time I will keep looking for less stressful clerical work closer to home. My job with the NHS has literally about 40% higher workload than any other position I've held and deadlines that can be added to with with no notice and it's driving me up the wall.

So I'm currently working my notice period and my current employer has made me an offer to stay.

I'm 50/50 at the moment. Supposed to give a decision today.

I'm kinda thinking the fact it's so close means it's not worth leaving. Can someone make a decision for me please?

Would a better offer fix the reason for leaving?

If yes - take the offer.
If no - reject the offer.
