Basically what I was about to suggest. You should definitely try and make the best of it though in case it affects your reputation in house.

It's one of those where the more I think about it, the worse the interview went.

I think I did fairly well in the assessment, which was an hour putting together a presentation to a board from scratch based on a couple of data reports.

The interview was just about okay, but a couple of questions really caught me off guard. Particularly:

"What should the top three strategic objectives for the department be over the next 12 months and how will you provide leadership in order to achieve them?"

That's one I simply needed to prepare for and as you know, I didn't get round to much of that.

Should find out tomorrow. I immediately got bad vibes from the chair who ended with "We're interviewing loads of people so we'll try to get a decision to you tomorrow" even though I know for a fact they're only interviewing four of us  basically setting me up for a rejection by giving the impression there's a huge amount of competition.

Just don't leave your prep until 2 hours before and you should be fine!

I didn't get the job I went for. Requested feedback, interested to see what they say.

Same here, although they offered me feedback before I even asked for it. The chair tells me I will be given a development plan to enable me to work towards suitability for the position until the next time it's available. Apparently I scored very strongly and was "very articulate", so she wants to sit with me to go through every question in detail.

Anyone ever felt like they need to start researching a new career, but not had a clue where to start? I really really need to get off night shifts in the next year or two and my current career means I never will in this line of work. So I need to do something different, but I've not got a clue even where to begin.

I've got a degree in Maths but I'm not really interested in finance, well not the traditional sort anyway. I love fiddling with bank accounts, dabbling with money and trying to save but that's as far as it goes.

For the past 5 years I've been in meteorology. I could stay with my current company and try to side step into another role, but that would mean a pay cut, and probably having to wait for a while to actually move, and there is a lot of competition for roles in headquarters that are daywork.

Anyone, completely changed career and know where to start looking? Maybe I could do a masters these next few years in something, but I've no idea what in.

Another option is to apply for a foreign job in Meteorology like Australia or NZ, but I would still end up doing shift work if that were the case.

Have you considered data science in marketing and analytics fields? That pays very well.

Basically it's dealing with big data queries so SQL and pivot tables etc. with large amounts of data to identify trends and spot opportunities in the performance of things like apps or websites and/or analysing customer data, sometimes across different verticals or channels. And then presenting that with hypotheses for stuff to do.

So basically large companies or marketing firms have massive dumps of data (hundreds of k or millions) and need help making sense of it. Most people doing it have some kind of background in statistics, maths or science. It's largely why platforms like Netflix are so successful because they update stuff every day based on what they see and that goes right up the product development chain to what kinds of TV programmes they commission or content they license.

tl;dr data driven business rather than "business acumen" or whatever.

You'd probably start in a web or app or SEO analytics role and then go from there, ultimately it is crunching numbers so not super interesting but the satisfaction you get from it is informing product development in a pro-active rather than reactive way to try and get ahead of things, which can make or break a company that's riding on a lot of risk with big budget stuff like software/apps or streaming/gaming.

Cool! Thanks, I think what i need to start doing over next few weeks and months is writing these things down, and then doing some research on different career prospects. I am quite a social person so I'd like to be in an environment where I can make friends through work, as I work a LOT by myself at the moment. Does give me chance to post on GRcade and watch films during night shifts. But myself drives me crazzy :p

Good grief I work with a bunch of neanderthals.

Just arrived at work and I'm sat out the back on my tod having a cuppa and all I can here coming from the main staff area is the security guard having the piss taken out of him for watching Rocket Man. The general train of thought being "Why did you watch that? You must be gay!". :fp:

It's a well known fact that you can catch gay through Elton John songs. I used to be straight, but after hearing "Sacrifice" I ended up sucking off 50 strangers. I dread the festive season as I know "Step into Christmas" will be played and I'll be forced to give Santa a handjob.

There should be enough No Context thread stuff there. ;)

Well Santa Elton did implore us all to "Come along with me" so I'm sure this was all just part of his sordid plan.

He obviously has some good stamina as well as he wants to watch the "snow" fall forever and ever.
